Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of iHome iH5 Clock Radio and Speaker System for iPod (White)

Customer Review: Great as a small, portable stereo
Summary: 5 Stars

I've wanted an iPod docking unit ever since I got my iPod, but the ones I've looked at were always a little too pricey for me. I received the iHome as a Christmas gift, and I absolutely love it.

My unit included an aluminum Rhino iPod case that fits 3G and 4G iPod and iPod Mini (thanks to removable pads). It's very sturdy, the iPod fits snugly, and all the ports are easily accessible. It also came with a remote, which I was quite pleased about.

The unit itself is sleek and well-designed. Simple and effective, like the iPod. Above the speakers on either side is a button wheel, one for volume and one to set the clock/alarm. In the middle, above the clock display, is a recession with rounded edges that houses the iPod docking port and the function buttons. The clock display is light blue, and it has three brightness settings. Because I use the iHome primarily as a portable stereo and not an alarm clock, the brightest setting doesn't bother me in the slightest. The orange light of the function buttons is a pleasing contrast with the blue display, and it mirrors the 3G iPod's design.

There are different docking inserts for all versions of the iPod, from the Nano to the iPod Photo, and if yours isn't included you can get one for free by contacting the manufacturer. There is also a line-in cable for connecting non-iPod music devices such as a CD player or a satellite radio unit (though these cannot be controlled via the function buttons on the unit), and there is a port for connecting external speakers.

The unit's built-in speakers sound great even at high volumes, and I've found that even excessive bass comes through clearly without muddying the sound. They sound better than my computer speaker setup, which is currently my only other stereo system.

The greatest thing about this unit is its portability. My computer is in the bedroom, and if I ever wanted to listen to music in another room, I'd either have to turn it up really loud or carry my iPod around with me. Now I can simply take this bad boy into the kitchen or the living room, plug it in or use the battery, and I've got great-sounding music without the annoyance of headphones.

I had hoped for the ability to select different tracks using the remote or the unit itself, but all it does is play or pause the iPod, or skip to adjacent tracks; you've got to use the iPod itself to select songs. Not really a major concern, but it's the only real gripe I have about the unit.

Everything else - the sleep timer, the easy-wake setting, etc. - is merely icing on the cake. I'll use this in place of my current alarm clock, but it'll probably be on the buzzer setting, because I need something loud and jarring to get me out of bed. My primary use for it is as a portable stereo that sounds great and integrates seamlessly with my iPod (and my girlfriend's iPod, or anyone else's who might want to play some music), and for that, it works perfectly.

Description of iHome iH5 Clock Radio and Speaker System for iPod (White)

With its built-in docking station and clean, contemporary design, the iHome iH5 clock radio is the perfect complement for your Apple iPod digital music player. Not only does the iH5 let you listen to your iPod music free from cumbersome headphones, it lets you fall asleep or wake to music you've loaded into your iPod. You can also wake or sleep to FM/AM radio or wake to a traditional buzzer. The compact unit measures roughly 9 x 3 x 6 inches (W x H x D) yet comes complete with stereo speakers, drift-free digital FM/AM radio tuning, a multifunction LCD with adjustable backlighting, and the ability to charge your docking iPod's battery right from its center seat. (The iH5 includes handy inserts to accommodate any type of docking iPod: 3G, 4G, iPod mini, or iPod photo.) Immediately upon plugging it in, the clock will set itself, drawing on its factory-installed 100-year calendar (year/month/day, 2000 to 2099). The clock will maintain accuracy all on its own, even self-adjusting for daylight savings time and leap years.Fall asleep to your favorite station or a carefully chosen iPod playlist using the unit's programmable sleep timer (15 to 120 minutes in 15-minute increments). Gradual Wake and Gradual Sleep features will increase (on wake-up) or decrease (on sleep) the system volume so as not to startle you. Adjustable sleep volume lets you select a comfortable "sleep" volume level without affecting the wake-to or listening volume levels. A supplied analog audio interconnect affords hookups with non-docking iPods, other MP3 players, cassette players, or other audio devices. Other features include automatic frequency control (AFC) for enhanced FM reception, an amber backlight on all primary buttons, and optical knobs for precise volume/tuning. For extra security, if you've selected iPod as your wake-to source and your iPod isn't docked, a buzzer will sound instead. The clock also comes with Sure Alarm battery backup--just install two AA batteries to activate the feature. In the event of a power failure, or if you disconnect the AC power cord to move it, the Sure Alarm system will maintain your clock and alarm setting for the life of the batteries, ensuring that the alarm will sound at the set time. The iH5 is "Made for iPod"-certified by Apple.
