I like this case with one minor quibble at the end of this review. I have tried several cases and this is my favorite.
I call it minimal. There is not much protection from dropping. The benefit I see is the textured surface that provides a better grip, helping to keep you from dropping it in the first place. (I think most cases, except the bulky ones, do not provide much protection from dropping anyway.)
The Apple logo and chrome trim remain visible. Among the cases I have used and seen, it best preserves the distinctive appearance of the iPhone 3G (at least, the black model).
It is not compatible with my iPhone 3G docking adapters, and I expected that. It would be nice if there were a flip hinge on the bottom to accommodate docking adapters. Because it does not completely wrap around the edges of the phone, it is not too hard to take off and put back on. I get a little nervous, though, because in the process of removing it, it scrapes on the seam between the chrome and black plastic (at least the way I do it). I do not want to pull to hard on that seam, to avoid potential separation problems (light leakage, etc. as reported sometimes on Apple support forums).
One complaint is when I use it with one hand. In doing so, I rest the phone on my little finger while texting with my thumb. There is a sharp edge at the bottom of the case that digs into my finger after a few minutes, making it uncomfortable. I think with a minor modification with a small file, I may be able to smooth that down. The case appears to be made of painted white plastic, however, so I have to be careful not to spoil the appearance too much.

We bought the SHIELD slim case for the iPhone and the elago slim case. We prefer the SHIELD, here is why:
Firstly, we wanted a very slim, lightweight, matte finish plastic case (not silicone) to protect our iPhones. These were the top two choices based on our research.
1. Both are very similar, so the differences are very slight, but...
2. The SHIELD wraps around the edges of the iPhone slightly more, providing better protection for the silver bezel.
3. The SHIELD has a cutout for the volume toggle switch (has protection on all 4 sides). The elago protects only 3 sides of the switch - this makes adjusting the volume slightly more difficult, but better protects the switch and prevents accidental pressing.
4. The SHIELD appears to be coated with a slightly thicker paint.
5. The elago is only painted partially on the inside (the side that you don't see), that's fine but you can see the edge of white unpainted area when looking closely. The SHIELD does not suffer from this problem.
6. The only place where I think the elago is better is the accuracy of the cutouts around the switches and connectors. The mold used to make the case I think is slightly better designed than the SHILED - this is an observation from an automotive engineer, not something that most people may care about.
IN conclusion, both are fine cases and have a nice tacky, almost rubberized feel, so it comes down to design - the SHIELD wins this comparison.

When I got the case I was immediately surprised at how similar the plastic looks to the back of the iphone. That is both good and bad. It looks good, is slick so there is no problem getting it out of your pocket but at the same time makes me wonder if it offers any real protection to my phone. It scratches just like the back of the iphone so if you are expecting it too look good for a long time look else where. But all in all considering the price I'm very happy with it.
