Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Zinwell ZAT-970A Digital to Analog TV Converter Box (for Antenna Use)Customer Review: Saved my old CRT TV from the scrap heap Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent find for an over-the-air (OTA) digital television (DTV) set-top-box (STB) receiver that works well with older analog televisions.
I have experience with two other OTA receivers at my house: the receiver built into a Dish Network 622 STB and the built-in receiver in my Samsung LN-T4661F LCD television. The signal sensitivity and signal quality accommodations of the Zinwell are better than these other two receivers. For Mountain View, CA, the Zinwell picks up 72 channels from 22 stations. The other receivers detect the same number of stations, but some of the weaker signals are not able to be decoded. The Zinwell decodes all the stations.
Some features of the Zinwell:
- For each station, the ZAT-7970A displays both the signal level and signal quality. This is important, as some signals may be strong, but due to linear or non-linear (dynamic) multipath, the quality can degrade. This is most noticeable on windy days when the trees around my antenna, and my antenna itself, sway around and can cause signal quality degradation, but the signal level is still high. The nice thing about having both readouts is you know if the station is off the air (or has a reduced signal) versus something buggering up the signal. This is the first receiver that I have seen with this breakout of the two components. Very nice.
- This STB allows grouping of channels in up to 10 groups. This is more than enough for any need. It's nice to set up groups for every person in the house, so no one has to wade through unwanted channels.
- Outputs are through a RF coax for connection to the antenna input on your television (viewed through channels 3 or 4, just like a VCR), and through RCA audio/video connections. There are no S-video or component video connections.
- You can select the video output mode for HD channels: 4:3 zoom, 4:3 letterbox or 16:9. For standard definition (SD) channels, the output defaults to a standard 4:3 display output.
- There is a volume control through the STB, so you can turn the TV volume up to the maximum you think you will want and let the STB control the volume (including mute), using just one remote for tuning and volume. Be careful not to turn the TV volume up too loud, as the amplifier may hiss at lower volume levels or you may not be able to turn it down to the right volume if you don't want to disturb someone else or go to sleep with low volume.
- The STB has a sleep timer, but this appears to be more of an inactivity timer, so if you don't change a station or do anything else for some period of time the unit will turn itself off. You can select the period of time from 1 hour to 8 hours, or turn off the feature. This is nice so you don't waste energy with the until being on all the time. TV power control (including the sleep function for the TV) will require the original television remote.
- There are up to 8 timers you can set to coincide with a VCR (they still make those?) timer. I doubt I will use the feature, but it is nice to have if you still use video tape. I have found that enough content is available online that I can usually find a replay a day or two later.
Overall, this STB was exactly what I was after. So much so that I've canceled my Dish Network subscription. Between online video content and OTA stations, I still get more than enough content to satisfy my needs. It also saved me from wasting a perfectly good analog CRT television that I use in my bedroom.
My only wish is that the unit had a HD option, or a big-brother model, for which I could upgrade my Samsung's reception in the livingroom.
