Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of ZVOX 325 High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound SystemCustomer Review: ZVOX sound is like surround sound Summary: 5 Stars
Now 2 years old, its the prototype of ZVOX technology and a bang for buck. I had the low end 315 too, but it distorted at high volume and sound peaks, so upgraded later. ZVOX sells reconditioned models at the 'auction' site for 50% off list price, with near the same warranty and return policy. Since they have a policy of buy, audition and return in 1 month for any reason, some of the units are likely those, so that's a great deal too.
Pros
Wide sound space, but not surround sound
You'll feel the sound coming from every angle except your back. If you use a surround sound test disk, it will show you what is lacking.
Ease of Use
The remote does volume and on/off only. PhaseCue can be adjusted for compromise, but it would be ideal if it could be adjusted as needed. The sturdy box can be used as a prop stand for the TV, simplifying placement locations in small rooms. If you are not tech inclined, set PhaseCue to 12o'clock on the dial and forget about it.
Maintenance
The remote is rarely used, and you could probably lose it, and it has a watch battery than eventually needs replacement.
Cons
Annunciators
There is no feedback from your volume control on the remote. The worse case is if your setting is too loud, you point the remote at a blind spot and you get no sound reduction because the unit it not receiving commands, but you can't be sure what the problem is.
PhaseCue Adjust
Setting up PhaseCue requires some knowledge of what it does. Once set, its not easy to re-adjust since controls are at the rear. You basically set it for the widest sound stage for your taste and leave it there forever. Some audio tracks for shows may sound better with PhaseCue readjusted, but when in doubt, reducing it is better than increasing it, as you reduce the center channel where most conversations are. Other models have PhaseCue adjusts on the remote, were it should be.
Comments:
Front firing speakers can't deliver rear sound, so the ZVOX sound is a compromise. HOWEVER, after years of using it, tired off it. Since video appears in front only, even if in 3D, it make sense for all the sound to come from there too. Sound coming from the rear makes you want to check the rear for activity, where there is nothing to see; with ZVOX the decoded sound seems to come slightly in front of the screen, before moving forward. Myself and friends who had true 5.1 and above, eventually stop using it because of the ear fatigue it causes, and often a new DVD or BD disk, needs the balance adjusted as the rear speakers tend to be too loud or too soft, rarely in between.
Description of ZVOX 325 High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound SystemThe ZVOX 325 is the perfect choice for someone who wants to add terrific sound to a television ? without the complication and expense of a 5.1 surround sound system. It delivers remarkably accurate, wide-range sound from a single compact cabinet; with only one connecting wire?.and a one-page owner?s manual. The 325 was created by legendary speaker designer Winslow Burhoe (founder of EPI Loudspeakers and Burhoe Acoustics). Frankly, we are amazed at how good the 325 sounds. It is simply delightful. Female vocalists sound warm, rich and natural. Music is reproduced with true high fidelity. Live concerts sound big and airy and awesome. Movie soundtracks are delivered with startling realism - including punchy, accurate bass. Even sporting events take on a new dimension with the 325 ? you?ll hear details you?ve never heard before. And all sound is reproduced with a sense of distortion-free ease. Never before has an audio system offered this combination of high performance, small size, simplicity and affordability. Just hook up its single connecting wire and you will transform your TV into a terrific home theater system...but without all the wires and boxes. "The 325 sounded great. An awesome system." - Sound & Vision magazine "Inspires sincere gadget lust...surprisingly good surround sound." - PC World "Superior to most we've tested." - CNET "Remarkable. We're amazed." - Maximum PC magazine "Great sound." - About.com
