Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of X-Rite Eye-One Display LT

Customer Review: Easy installationa and usage
Summary: 5 Stars

I have noticed an improvement in the output of my photographs helping me in the process of producing my artworks.

Customer Review: Eye-One Display LT does the job
Summary: 4 Stars

From what I can still tell, the LT model does most of what I will ever need (versus Pro model). I bought it to get improved consistency in the color rendition across my prints -- some done in labs, some on professional inkjet printers. Everything has worked like a champ, and I can see a visual difference on the screen which I'm hoping will translate into more consistent color on my prints.

The only reason I didn't rate 5 stars is that there are couple usability improvement that are needed. First, there were places in the UI where I pressed the wrong button/choice because it wasn't clear or intuitive which option to choose. If I had read the instructions on the right hand side of screen, it would have been fine (I don't usually read instructions). The other reason is that I had cleared out the items in my Windows Startup folder, and not only did I wipe out the ICC profile data, but I couldn't figure out a way to get the profiles back short of re-installing the software. I should have been able to just run the calibration software, but tried and it didn't do the trick. Again, might be user error, but it could have been more intuitive.

Otherwise, I'm really pleased with the ease of setup and use, and would still highly recommend the product to anyone who wants an entry level solution and questions whether they need the 'pro' version.

Customer Review: A good deal if you can still get one
Summary: 4 Stars

My understanding is that this is a discontinued item. I felt it was a good buy at the discounted price.

The good news is that my prints are now much closer to what I see on my monitor. Any remaining issues are small and are, I suspect, a consequence of monitor brightness settings and paper profiles. This is where a caution comes in: This device doesn't give you any feedback about brightness settings. Advice yes; actual readings, no. Part of the reason for this is that the amount of ambient light you have is going to affect the monitor image and, ultimately, the agreement of that image with a print.

Some words of advice: to get the best results from this, or any other calibration device, you have to (1) be prepared to deal with the complex and often confusing world of color management and; (2) be prepared to do a lot of experimentation. In the latter case, I suggest using 4X6" paper of the same type that you intend to use for larger prints. If you don't use the printer manufacturer's inks, then all bets are off. This is not to say that you can't get good prints when you use inks or papers for which you don't have profiles--just that you'll have to resort to lots more testing and luck to get that result.

Customer Review: Works Well With Linux
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product specifically because Argyll CMS supports it. Setting up and calibrating the screen on my laptop was very simple: I followed the instructions on this page[..] and was up and running in about 15 minutes. Having a correctly calibrated monitor has made all the difference in the world, reds would be too saturated and shadows would print too dark. Now all the colors look the same on the screen as on the camera. I have not tried printing, but since the colors now look "right" with little adjustment, I suspect this will mean that the prints will no longer have off colors. The images look the same on both GIMP and Digikam, which was not the case before. The only problem is that the screen looks a little too dark now, but I figure that will be resolved once I correct the lighting in my work area and re-calibrate the monitor in a couple of weeks.

Overall the price was good and the device was recognized immediately by Ubuntu without any extra drivers needed, so no headaches there.

Customer Review: when you get a hang of it, its wonderful!
Summary: 4 Stars

The instructions suck. The installation is non-intuitive. After I bought it and installed the bundled software, apparently there are 2 year old updates that need to be downloaded. That immediately wastes about 15 minutes of your time. You'd think they'd update the CD in the package after 2 years. Operation is non-intuitive too. You need to watch the video tutorials to fully understand what needs to be done. Its a lot easier to use this thing on a stand alone monitor than a laptop monitor.

I still don't get what the I1Diagnostic software does. I guess I gotta thumb through the CD again :(

After all the hardships of pulling it out of the box and struggling with the installation and calibration (such is the case for laptops) due to poorly written "quick set up guide", my laptop monitor now produces beautiful and brilliant colors, fine detail and great contrast.

Recommended if you are technically inclined.
