Customer Review: Interesting concept that doesn't pan out

At first it seems like a good idea, WASD with all the keys you could ever need for an FPS arranged in close proximity. However, what seems like a good idea at first quickly proves to be the opposite when you actually try it. I found that I had an incredibly hard time actually being aware of the key layout and being able to hit the right keys subconsciously like I can on a regular keyboard. The main factor contributing to this is that the keys themselves are not curved like on a regular keyboard, but rather are fairly flat, making it more difficult to tell if your fingers are centered on the keys. On my main keyboard I can literally put my hand down and without looking, my fingers find their way to WASD within moments. When I put my hand down on the Warrior my fingers have absolutely no idea where they are. The shape of the keys does absolutely nothing to guide your fingers to the home position, and that's simply unacceptable for a product that you should never have to look at. The first gaming session I played with this, whenever I would reach for the ctrl key with my pinky I would actually go one key too far and hit the tilde key instead, bringing up the game's console. I believe this was because I couldn't feel an obvious boundary between the shift and ctrl keys and so my finger kept going.
Another gripe is the use of a laptop-style key mechanism with very little key travel and terrible tactile feel. Anyone who's ever typed on a laptop keyboard should know how much it sucks. The only benefit to this style of keys is a slimmer profile, but making it twice as thick with regular keys really wouldn't have had that much of an impact on its portability.
The third issue is really with the main selling point of the pad - the circular layout. Good in theory, but when you use it you start to realize how much the grid-like layout of a regular keyboard helps you find keys without looking. Being able to think "one up and two over" in conjunction with standardized key shapes and sizes allows you to reach out and hit a key and return to the home position without thinking. The Warrior messes around with the key shapes and sizes too much, making it very difficult to reach out and hit keys without developing a muscle memory for the position of each individual key.
The fact is that my regular keyboard does just fine at putting keys where I need them for FPS gaming. I purchased the Warrior with the expectation that it would help me do better by placing keys in more natural positions, but unfortunately it falls short.
