Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert PeriscopesCustomer Review: Great for the Price but Only Satsifactory Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned this since March 2010 and I'm just at the three out of five on the satisfied scale. I can't hardly be dissatisfied when it only cost $34.00 but I can't be completely satisfied because there are things I don't like about it.
The unit works, it's not a Passport Escort but it does function and give warnings of radar. You have to kind of use it and learn to differentiate false from positive warnings. I wouldn't suggest speeding until you use the unit for a few months and get accustom to this. The best way is to drive around and watch what it does when there's an actual police unit around and compare it to false warnings caused by automatic doors/alarm systems/etc... The real problem is I've often found police units running radar in areas which cause a lot of false positives. So it's difficult to know whether there's police unit there or not. It's a very sly tactic of the police but effective none the less. So I've learned to just drive slow in such areas. I don't even think a Passport Escort could help in such situations, particularly the one that blocks false warnings based on Lat/Long if there's been multiple false warnings from same area. I don't want any area blocked, I'd rather have false warnings.
What I don't like about this unit is the flashing lights! I know they meant well when they made this but there needs to be a way to dim them. There's been numerous occasions when a police unit pulls in behind me and this thing is just flashing and flashing and I know they can see it. I often have to unplug the thing. It's not illegal to run a detector in my state but if they see that, there's no doubt they'll find a reason to pull me over. So I'd rather be able to dim the lights on the unit at night.
The unit functions pretty good. If I'm on a straight highway. The unit will do a quick flash and beep. If I'm traveling at 65 mph, I have maybe a second to hit the brakes. It usually picks up a radar signal from a mile away. As the police unit gets closer, the unit will flash and beep faster and faster and more signal bars will show. Until I pass or the police unit passes. It's great for catching police running radar from the opposite side of the highway. Police will often sit in the median and run radar both directions. Then sometimes they'll sit on the far side and run radar on both sides of the highway and cut through the median to go after the speeder.
The unit isn't very good around corners. It usually gives maybe a few seconds warning and that's it. But it's been enough warning to spare me from a ticket. You have to just get to know the unit and develop almost a sixth sense for differentiating positive and negative warnings. I'm probably going to take some auto scratch touch up paint and paint over the blue lights, so they won't be flashing anymore. Then I'll likely get some black masking tape to put over the front LEDs to dim them down.
What I do like about this unit is that it turns off and turns on automatically when I shut off the car. This probably because my DC outlet doesn't have power until the key is Aux or car is turned on. What would suck is if your vehicle doesn't do this and you have turn on and off this unit every time or else run down the battery. That would be really annoying but for me the fact it powers on and off when I turn off the car is a positive feature.
Overall it's a great introductory unit and it's gotten me into radar detection and given me more of an idea of what features I want and need in a radar detector. I can better see the benefits in the features more pricey units provide, which makes me more comfortable spending more money. I drove a car the other day without a radar detector and I felt like I was driving blind. After using a detector for six months, my driving behavior has changed. Although don't use the unit to speed excessively, it does save me tickets in those times where I'm unware the speed limit is 30 mph and I'm doing 40 mph. I think those instances is where radar detection really serves it's purpose. The majority of us, don't drive 90 mph, but many of us drive 40 mph in a 30 mph and a 10 mph can easily be $120. It's one thing to get a ticket for doing 80 mph in a 70 mph and another for doing 40 mph in a 30 mph. I feel ripped off when I get a ticket for 40 in 30 compared to 80 in a 70. I guess a $120 ticket for 80 in a 70 feels like I'm getting more for my money!

Icon Display The XTR-140 display offers easy-to-read icons to indicate power, city mode, radar band identification, and signal strength. Twin Alert Periscope Whistler's exclusive Twin Alert Periscope provides an added attention-getting visual alert, with two extra LEDs flashing on and off when the unit alarms. Three City Modes and Highway Mode Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity. Highway mode is the default setting of all Whistler's laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode), then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases, the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength. Quiet/Auto Quiet Modes Pressing QUIET before a signal is detected engages Auto Quiet Mode, which automatically reduces the audio level after the initial warning to a low audio level setting. Pressing QUIET during a radar/laser encounter silences audio alerts, while allowing visual alerts to keep you informed. Alert Priority When two or more signals are received at the same time, the alert priority is: Laser, VG-2, Speed Radar, Safety Radar. Example: If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert. Vehicle Battery Saver Mode The Vehicle Battery Saver Mode automatically shuts off your detector within three hours if you forget to turn it off. The timer is reset if the detector is turned off or unplugged, or any button is pressed before the six hours have expired. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off. Patented VG-2 Cloaking Technology The VG-2, also known as a "radar detector detector," is a special receiver used by police to detect signals radiated by a radar detector. The XTR-330 alerts you its presence, and thanks to Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, it also provides undetectability.
