Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital WDXMS1200TN Passport 120 GB USB 2.0 2.5-Inch Portable Hard DriveCustomer Review: Thank heavens Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using on-line backup services and paying monthly fees, but was never quite sure that I had set them up right. I had to designate which files to back up, etc. I don't know a file from a folder, much less where to find the file that holds my internet favorites and other obsure things I knew I should be backing up. My confidence level was low. I finally got concerned enough to visit Amazon and read about the product and what others were saying about all the available products. I finally purchased the WD Passport and plugged it in and away it went, whirring and lightly humming for 15 minutes. Then it stopped. I got a list of the files it backed up and it looked complete, a lot more complete with three times the data that I had been backing up myself with the online service. "That must be good," I thought. But more faith was required in hopes that it did all it should do. Literally one day after doing the backup, my computer's hard drive started bumping, screeching, then . . . nothing. I bought a new computer, plugged in my WD Passport, and away it went, whirring and lightly humming. Then it stopped. I said a little prayer and opened up various programs. It was all there. My photos were all there. My documents were all there. My favorites all there. Thank you Western Digital!!!!!
Customer Review: Western Digital WDXMS1200TN 120 GB Passport USB 2.0 Hard Drive Summary: 5 Stars
The passport drive worked perfectly right out of the box without the need for any installation. I use it with a Dell desktop and a Compaq laptop, both running XP Home SP2. I have not experienced any "insufficient power" issues, but I suspect that this is most likely to happen when connecting to a laptop powered off battery only - if you experience such an issue, I would recommend buying a Y-cable so that the passport can connect to the laptop via two usb ports - not a terribly elegant solution, but hopefully, it will solve the issue. The drive is pre-formatted with FAT 32, which concerned me initially since both of my computers are formatted with NTFS and I wanted to have everything consistent (anal retentive, I know). But, the bottom line is that unless you are likely to store files larger than 4 GB, Fat 32 is just fine. For comparison, most usb flash drives are also formatted with Fat 32. The piano black finish is very attractive, although like any iPOD, it is prone to scratching - unfortunately, a protective case is not offered standard. The physical size of the drive is appropriately compact for carrying on your person. I have been using mine for about eleven months, and there have been no issues yet. Overall, this is a wonderful product and you won't be disappointed with your purchase.
Customer Review: Just found the most convenient bonus... Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this for about three months. Until yesterday, I had nothing either especially negative or especially positive to say about it - I needed a device to transfer multiple files between my home computer and my work computer, and something that I could use when I travel, and this is small and it's quiet and it does the job, but I paid a lot for it so I was kind of neutral about the whole thing. BUT I just realized the best thing - the USB cord can also charge my phone. I have a motorola Razr phone and it's the same connection. This is great for me since I spend so much time at work and I have lost my charge before when I've forgotten to charge my phone at night. There is one caveat - I had already downloaded a program so I could charge my phone through a friend's USB cord that he bought specifically to charge his phone through his computer (it's cheaper than a new charger, apparently...) so I suspect that others would have to find that program and download it. But this is a very handy and unexpected bonus for me, and I know the Razr is a pretty popular phone, and motorola uses that same connection for other phones (like the Q)...so I'm hoping this info will help more than one percent of the folks out there. Enjoy!
Customer Review: Rating: 1 STAR: Died THREE WEEKS after warranty ran out. Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, I once loved this drive, and reviewed it with a 5 star rating. Apparently you can't change that rating once it's done, because it would only be 1 STAR now. My iTunes library was stored on this drive. I keep a back-up on another (Lacie) hard drive. Anyway, I was having trouble syncing my iPhone, and it was suggested that it may be a problem with my external drive. I didn't believe it because it had been such a good little hard drive since I bought it January 22, 2007. But when I got home, I decided to simply erase the drive and start over, but as soon as I started simply moving around files on the drive, the files started disappearing. Within 2 minutes, Disk Utility became unable to even initialize the drive because of some error. Not only is all that data gone (I can't stress the importance of backing up your data), but the drive is worthless. It's not like I can just forgive this hiccup and start fresh on the drive. Instead, I have to reinvest my money in a new one. WD wouldn't even consider giving me a credit toward a new one because it was THREE WEEKS OUT OF WARRANTY. If you buy one of these, don't consider it stable or think that your data is safe. Always keep a back-up.
Customer Review: Small, queit and reliable hard drive Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this hard drive as another back up for my Seagate 250gb hard drive that sometimes can't be read from the USB hub. I use this hard drive to transfers files from work to home if I need to work from home. My job involves working with print and new media delivery ranging from designing brochure, poster etc, to CD-Rom, website, interface design, video, etc. So as you see, I work with graphic intensive file and most of the time they are quiet large files.
Since this drive will live mostly inside my bag, I need a small hard drive with large capacity that fit on my bag without feeling like carrying a brick, but also reliable to get a little abuse from being carried inside my bag. So far, I'm happy with its performance. Western Digital Passport is reliable, fast and quiet. It plugs easily on my Mac or PC.
I have owned 2 desktop hard drives and 1 NAS hard drive from Western Digital. I like them, they are quiet and reliable. They comes with the back up software that's easy to use. I'm planning to buy more WD hard drive - My Book Studio and another 250gb Passport.
So I gave two thumbs-up for this drive.
