Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital WD Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDE1UBK10000N (Black)Customer Review: Performs as expected. Summary: 5 Stars
In the time i've been using the WD Elements external HD (almost one month) it hasn't given me any trouble. It is pretty silent and relatively fast when I am browsing my considerable music and movies collection.
I've been using it as it came, with a FAT32 filesystem, together with my Ubuntu Linux laptop. I don't have an eSATA port so I went with this drive that has a single USB 2.0 connection (although if I had one, I would have chosen otherwise).
I chose this one as I already have another WD external HD (a 320GB Passport) that has also worked well. This HD looks very solid and sturdy and it is much cheaper than its MyBook equivalent.
The actual size reported when mounted on my filesystem is 931.3 GB.
Customer Review: Everything I needed Summary: 5 Stars
Purchased to use as a backup drive for my music and for movie playback to my Western Digital HD Media player. Has been in use now for about 10 months with no hiccups or data loss. I occassionally take it to work to back up my laptop but for the most part it stays at home, so I can't say too much about durability. It would have been nice to have the hard drive powered via usb but at the time, the value for price was good, and there wasn't much else available with such a large capacity. I have maybe 50 GBs left so will most likely purchase another. The hard drive is very quiet, even during transfers. It can be warm to the touch but not excessively where one might worry about damage to the data. I recommend this product.
Customer Review: Excellent product Summary: 5 Stars
Very robust, and transferring data from my desktop hard drive to this hard drive is quite fast too. Hardly makes any noise. The only slight disadvantage is that it has no power ON/OFF switch. The only way I can power it off is by unplugging the power cord - minor inconvenience compared, and given the quality of the product, I am not complaining too much. Also it is formatted in FAT32, so just run a quick format to convert it to NTFS. It is recommend you do this right away before copying any data, full format will takes ages.
I ordered this product on Sunday evening, and it arrived on Tuesday - very pleased with the shipping. Major credit to Amazon.
Highly recommended and well worth $99.
Customer Review: Western Digital 1TB exernal hard drive Summary: 5 Stars
Western Digital Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDE1UBK10000N (Black). It amazes me that a one terabyte external hard drive is available for under $100. This is a great hard drive. As others have recommended, you should reformat from FAT32 to NTSF. It takes over eight hours, something you can start before you go to bed, and it's done in the morning.
I copied over 360GB of data, in FAT32, then reformatted and copied again. There is a significant difference in speed, and I had some size issues in FAT32 that were not an issue in NTSF.
This hard drive works fine with Windows 7, the hard drive was recognized immediately.
This is a wonderful back up device
Customer Review: Solid, simple to use drive Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this drive to backup my main HD and another external HD.
This drive comes with no software, and really, none is needed.
Windows 7 recognized it immediately, and I backup to it using Open GFI Backup 2009 software.
Speed is sufficient for what I am using it for. Does not get hot, and is hardly warm to the
touch. No fan included, but it is vented on the front and back, and that seems to do the trick.
Nice, straight forward housing, and small footprint.
I gave Dependability only 3 stars as I have only had this drive for about a month, and true
dependability should be reviewed on a long term basis. So far however, it has been bulletproof.
