Customer Review: WD 1tB External Hard Drive - Linux
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this WD Elements drive several months ago to use with an Ubuntu Linux machine. It is about 8 inches long and nearly 5 inches wide, which is larger than the WD Passport Essential drives I already had. The case is metal with rubber non slip coverings over the ends, while the Passports have plastic cases, and feels quite heavy duty. This Elements drive uses an external power adapter, which means it can have a longer USB cable to the computer (the Passport uses a short cable which powers it from the computer itself). I reformatted the entire 1 tB drive into Linux ext3 format in less than 5 minutes. It is virtually silent, and does not get warm when operating. After a period of inactivity, it spins down, which is good. No problems encountered so far using it with my Linux computer over the past few months.

This EHD worked flawlessly and was unbelievably quiet, my only complaint is the power source included. I pulled the item from the box and thought 'man here is a hard drive that can take a beating' then i pulled out the power source and thought 'this is the cheapest piece of crap i have ever seen' i used this item for months carrying it around and beating it to death without one problem right up until the cord of the power source broke. the power source is a twelve volt with a 1500 ma output which is very hard to find at a local retailer, once i ordered a new one i realized that it had shorted out the hard drive when the original broke.
I do recommend this product but dont waste a second finding a more sturdy power source to replace the paper weight that comes with it.

Customer Review: Western Digital 1 TB Hard Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered the WD 1 TB hard disk about 3 weeks ago. I have my computer backed up by Carbonite off-site service but also decided to back up the entire computer on-site with the 1 TB hard drive. It holds the entire contacts of my computer with ease. It seems to work quite well. It is very quiet. I would have to put my ear right on the drive to hear that it is operating. It remains very cool to the touch. No heat at all.

One of my programs said that the drive gave errors indicating that it was getting ready to fail, but I have not seen any problems yet. If it fails, then I will know the program was correct. Until then, the drive keeps working well and I am happy with it. For $109.00, I can't complain.

Customer Review: Great external drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a half a dozen other external hard drives and I have to say that by far, this is the best.
The next closest would be the WD MyBook (which is too large).
I have even stacked 2 Elements on top of each other and was at first concerned about heat, but they never get more than warm to the touch.

The majority of the problems I get with external drives is that over time, the drive is no longer visible to my computer and I sometimes need to power cycle it. That is ridiculous and makes me concerned about when the drive no longer boots.

But I sleep soundly knowing that the WD Elements keep working. I can keep it in my server (fitPC) and know that I am able to access it when I'm on the go.

Customer Review: Western Digital 1 TB External Hard Drive Use
Summary: 5 Stars

This Western Digital (WD) Hard Drive is easy to install, but it does not come with operating instructions. I had to experiment a little bit and did the following. I went to Computer on Vista and found on Folder named Downloads on the WD Hard Drive. I deleted that Folder and then went to Organize Tab and added two folders: Microsoft Word and Videos. I then went to Microsoft Word Documents on my C Drive and used the Send funtion to send/save to Disk Files transferred from the C Drive to the WD J Drive. You cannot save files directly on the WD J Drive, but must instead Send them from the C Drive to the J Drive. This is a minor inconvenience and overall I am very happy with how the System works with the WD J Drive.
