I bought six of these for various backup purposes and replacements for a bunch of older, smaller externals. So far, so good, they have worked very well for me. I keep MD5s of all the files I put on them and haven't seen any corruption yet, although I haven't been checking them often. One thing I like is the rubber bumper around the outside. They can be stacked high and are hard to tip over. One will definitely not slide off of the desk unless you really want it to. A downside is that they get very hot when being used for a while. With the huge storage, it takes some time to copy hundreds of gigs to them so they do get hot often. I'm no longer buying these though. Instead I've started buying the WD 2gb models. Unfortunately the new models do not have the same rubber bumper and have switched to a mini-usb plug which means I need to have both cables around all the time. On the other hand their AC adapters are compatible so I don't need both.Customer Review: The Best of alll Ext Hard Drives !!!

I'm not really worried about super fast transfer, so I've not benchmarked anything. However, I would say this moves about two gigs or more a minute from my experience. I've had it for a number of months and it works just fine. Does come formatted FAT32, so you should do a format to NTFS if using windows. You can do a quick format which takes minutes, but you really should always do a full format on new hard drives, which unfortunately takes a few hours on a TB drive. However, doing this will find any bad sectors and you'll know you have problems before running into them down the line and losing data over it. My old Maxtor got pretty hot to the touch, but this drive barely gets warm. It is really quiet, as well. It doesn't have a light to show HD activity on the front, but that doesn't bother me.
If I need another HD at some point, I'll probably get another one of these.

I bought this hard drive mainly to store my useful files which I occasionally used. I am running a Window 7 64 bit software and an intel i7 core processor with USB 2.0 interface. I found that the external hard disk was working very efficiently with my computer. It could copy 100G of datas in one hour and fifteen minutes. The pay back time is fast. However you must remember to stop the USB device before you disconnect the hard drive from the computer. Otherwise, the computer or any computer will not recognize it when you connect it again the next time. It took me quite some time to fix the problem. The case is very solid. It gives me a sense of security that it will perform for a long time. It was very quiet and I felt a little warm even though I ran it for hours. I recommend it to anyone who needs space for files and the internal hard disk is critical for use on other issues.Customer Review: Western DIgital Elements External Hard Drive

An extremely well-bult compact hard drive. Just plug and play with no problems. The other revews are accurate in how easy, solid noiseless and coll-temperature running ithas even under extreme and prolonged data transfers. It is quick and I actually use it as my "primary" drive, leaving my laptop's hard drive with plenty of free space for backing up photos and videos I will always keep. Furthermore, it is compact enough to take with you anywhere with little hassle. The power cord is fairly long to reach a plug within 2-3 feet of you. It is a fantastic buy at just over $119.00 (free shipping & tax included). Western Digital has built a top-notch product. I will definitely be being another one when I need it, Even my cousin is planning to buy one when he saw how well, quick and easy it works. You can't go wrong at this price.
