Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital WD Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDE1UBK10000N (Black)Customer Review: Sturdy performance Summary: 5 Stars
The first thing you notice about the WD Elements 1TB drive is just how solid and substantial it feels in your hands. I have had this drive for 6 months now and have filled up close to 500+ GB. The drive has been performing well without any hiccups. The solid build and the silicone/rubber casing at the corners make it exceptionally quiet and resistant to most shocks on a desktop environment. You could potentially tote it around - and maybe acquire a better tricep definition.
There is no need for any extra software installations. The drive works simply plugged in to the computer. I took the advice of some of the other reviewers here and formatted the drive the first time. Apparently, this is supposed to be the acid-test for lemon drives. It took around 10 hours to format - slow, but I was not in a hurry. Was glad to see that the format went without incident.
WD Elements is relatively quiet compared to many other external/internal hard-drives. Occasionally, it does make a chirpy noise when it becomes active after a period of inactivity. Nothing worth wringing your hands about, though.
Forget about other fancy crazy lighted 1TB drives out there. You need a dependable hard-drive not a party-strobe system while you are sleeping. WD Elements is quietly elegant and consistently gives a high performance. I would recommend this external hard drive without any reservations.
Customer Review: Like a Rock, So far so good Summary: 5 Stars
It's hard to review an external hard drive without having it for 5+ years, since they essentially all do the same thing: store your files separate from your computer. I have about 5 different brands of hard drives laying around, because as many of you know from experience, a backup is only as good as long as the backup doesn't break. Unfortunately external hard drives tend to fry just like our laptops do, so I have backups of backups and so on.
In any case, so far what I love about this one is that it is STURDY and STRONG. I think it could probably survive a fire, definitely not something my plastic hard drives could say. It's extremely quiet, attractive, and would stack nicely had I had others like it.
The downside is that there is no Off switch, meaning the only way to turn it off is to unplug it, which is a good suggestion if it's not in use.
I guess that's all I can say for now. As far as setting it up it's as easy as sticking it in your usb port and moving your files over. No software, no hassle.
If you've never bought an external hard drive before and are simply wondering Should you get one? The answer is Yes, Yes, Yes. Your computer will run so much quicker without having to calculate gigs and gigs of your files, and even though the external hard drives break too, I'd trust them more than my laptop.
Good luck!

Customer Review: Excellent drive for the money Summary: 5 Stars
I was very careful when I went to buy an external hard drive. I wanted a larger one to store music, accounting files and backups of our work computers, and did not need a drive that was extremely portable. If you are looking for a small drive I would still argue that this drive is small. Sure, it's not the size of a fish stick, but it's portable enough to fit in any backpack/purse and still be rugged enough to handle drops and being hit on tables and other mishaps. Probably the best thing about it is the rubber at each end that keep it in one place on my desk, rather than it shifting around. It is not loud, it has never had a problem (I have been using it pretty much nonstop for 3 months now, this is after a reformat to the NTFS system, which Windows performed without error), and it does not constantly blink (the one read/write light is in the rear).
All in all, for those of you looking for a large (1TB+) portable hard drive, know that this is one that is quick and reliable, and able to take all the damage you see fit to do to a piece of sensitive electronic equipment. You can also get these at a fairly reasonable price, especially if buying one used or from a reseller. It does not have firewire support, but you should know that from reading other reviews already. This is a purchase I would definitely make again.
Customer Review: Perfect add on for Dish DVR Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this drive with a very specific purpose- to add storage capability to my Dish Network DVR. The DVR has a USB port which allows you to add (after you pay Dish $40) up to 1TB of external storage.
This drive works great. I plugged it in, connected the included USB cable, the DVR recognized it, and everything has worked fine since. The DVR allows you to watch imaged directly from the external disk, and I am able to watch HD recordings with no problems. I did not see any signs of dropped frames, blocking, or any other visual artifacts. Therefore the drive is as fast as it needs to be.
The drive is a nice size, and fits on my entertainment rack with no issues. Even better, it doesn't have any fancy lights flashing on and off for no apparent reason- just one small blue LED on the rear of the unit. In fact, with its generic black case, it pretty much disappears into the shadows of the shelves-you don't even notice it.
It seems to run cool to the touch, and makes little if any noise. With the glass front closed, you would never know it is there.
In short, it is the perfect drive for this application.
The only shortcoming is that the power supply is a wall-wart, meaning yet more gyrations for my power strip.
