Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital VelociRaptor 300 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, 16 MB Cache, 10,000 RPM SATA II WD3000GLFSCustomer Review: Excellent Hard Drives for Speed Demons amongst us!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
The infamous VelociRaptor - wow...what a drive.
It is fast...it works as advertised.
Very easy to install.... I will give updates to this review in the future to update you on status, speed, use, etc.
UPDATE:
Dont buy this for a MAC Pro - the heatsink makes it impossible to add to a mac. You have to buy an adapter kit and it destroys the warranty... The adapter kit is sold at some website.....they charge $48 for one adapter which includes a make shift heatsink. THE DRIVE IS GREAT...but not for a mac pro.
UPDATE 01/26/09
I purchased this for my MAC Pro and bought the extra adapter...thereby voiding my warranty etc.. However, for me it was a great decision. This makes my mac pro SCREAM....it is a super product with great speed. Seek times have improved by as much as 20% and my boot times have gone from about 2 minutes (total from power on to ready state) to about 55 seconds. Now I know that we can all wait 2 minutes for boot up..but when you get a drive like this and the immediate changes are apparent...you know that everything you do on your pc/mac will be faster.
Great Drive.
Customer Review: Very Fast Drive, very bad packaging Summary: 5 Stars
I can't say allot on HDD, its fast and doing the job.
Take in consideration these important factors:
1- it's not exactly 3.5" HDD size, it's non standard HDD size almost 2.5" however it's thicker fitted in heat sink to make it almost 3.5", however it's slightly bigger and can be a problem in installing it, depends on your PC case. I had to do some serious modifications to fit it in my HTPC
2- packaging is extremely bad, no cables, no connectors, no catalogues. Just a nylon cover, I wonder why they have invested in this cover?
Price: overpriced, do not expect 10x difference speed, speed difference comparing to the price difference it are extremely high.
Unless you are in audio / video processing this is not your baby, it's just waste of money.
For gaming and video playing, it perform exactly the same as my 1TB 7200 RPM 32mb, price of the 1tb is US$120
Windows Vista booting is improved for few seconds.
Customer Review: May be I am lucky Summary: 5 Stars
I have too many HD's. Their sizes are getting bigger and bigger, quieter and quieter but similar price and same speed. SO this is what I have been looking for, >=300GB, significantly faster than what I have, but not too expensive, for my daily usage.
I did hesitate because bad sectors and crash issues reported. But at this price plus $30 rebate, it is also very tempting. Here is my feedback.
1. Its OEM package but very secure.
2. It was formatted regularly(not quick format) in my PC for initial testing. No problem.(1 hr)
3. Ran WD data lifeguard extended test for 3 times. No problem reported(40 mins for each test)
4. Cloned my old hd to it and ran 3dDMARK for a few times. No problem.
5. Ran some games. No problem.
I think WD may found and fix the reliability problem. But they have to reduce the price low enough to make it up. I will post more, should it fail on me. Good luck.
Customer Review: Better than SCSI or Raid 0 or even Solid state Summary: 5 Stars
Why bother with configuring a SCSI or two drive in raid 0 when this is just as fast and it plug in play. I would use this drive on the OS and program install only and a 2 terabyte for saving content like video pics and docs. \
As far as vs a Solid state drive yes the solid state book faster but who cares the important part is real world use like audio and video conversion real world transfer rates ect... and for that this drive is still faster than Solid state drives i feel solid state still needs improvements but are good for laptops as they boot faster, resume faster and use less energy and don't heat up as much.
I had problems with earlier models that would make my system run hot from all the heat but this one has a nice dissipator the improves that drastically. I also had the problem that they where super noise but this model is extremely quiet. I must buy till the larger version of this drive comes out.
Customer Review: I really do notice the speed increase Summary: 5 Stars
I only use western digital hard drives. I have done so for the past 10+ years. I also build my own computers.
In the past I've only used 7200rpm drives and found them to be sufficient. I finally made the plunge into 10000rpm drives, when WD offered a decent memory size. The hard drive runs quiet and stays pretty cool.
I use this for my operating system and to game. Stick with 7200rpm drives for storage...at least until the price/gb drops on 10000rpm drives.
