I wanted a small portable storage device; one that I backup my files onto. It's powered by the USB, which I preferred, and has more than enough memory. The only downside is that it did not come with a backup software, as far as I could tell. I was doing a routine backup to one of these drives and clumsily caught the cable with my hand. The drive fell about 3 feet from the desk onto a hardwood floor. I was sure the drive would be ruined, but the backup continued to completion without error. Picked this up for use as a backup disc for a MacBook using Apple's Time Machine. Runs flawlessly off bus power directly from the laptop. Running without a hitch for nearly 3 months at this point and warrantied for 3 years. Sleek, small, convenient. Have several WD externals and no complaints yet. I needed this external hard drive because it's portable and convenient plus my macbook's internal hard drive had too little space. It's very easy to use (just plug and it works!) and should have more than enough memory for everyday needs (pictures, videos, etc.). The pleasing aesthetic is also a plus!
