This is probably one of the most helpful things I've purchased for my laptop! I own flash drives which are nice for quick transfers or getting that new song from your buddy, but this HDD is the perfect solution for those "bigger" issues.
First off the size is perfect, fits right in the pocket of my laptop case, and takes up very little space on my already overflowing desk. Its whisper quite, and holds a ton of stuff! Its great to take files home from work, and use them vice versa, and the ability to grab this drive instead of a whole laptop, with case, charger...brilliant! Its powered off USB which is also a noteworthy feature, since external power can be a bit of a problem when on job sites and such.
Price is great, storage is great, build quality is great...now one little problem and its very nit picky! The finish on this thing is really stunning, for about 10 minutes...then you notice hairline swirls and scratches in your black gloss finish. Like I said it doesn't affect the quality or effectiveness of this item...just bothers me seeing my nice black HDD scuffed up. Not a deal breaker though, Ill get over it!

I've just purchased my 2nd Western Digital "My Passport Essential". One is used to back up all my photo and MP3 files, while the other holds 1,500 music videos - with more than enough room for another 1,500! My Passport Essential Western Digital My Passport Essential 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive WDME3200TN (Midnight Black)took the place of a couple hundred CDs. Talk about space saving - and for less than half the price of the CDs!
You can plug into the USB port on a friend's computer (PC or Mac) and run files instantly. It's easy to upload and download files - and you just can't beat it for portability.
My Passport Essential is super-streamlined, and smaller in size than a man's billfold. Because it is so light-weight, you could carry it in the pocket of your jacket and forget it's even there (which I've done on occasion).
For simplicity of use, low price, and portability - you'll really appreciate this durable external hard drive. 'Bye-bye, CDs!

It's difficult to accurately rate a hard drive because its most important trait is how long it lasts. But I'm not going to wait several years to see if it crashes or not before writing a review. (But you can be sure if it craps out in an unreasonably short amount of time I will raise hell.)
Anyway, it's served me well so far in the approximately two months I've had it. Being bus-powered makes it convenient. Being completely enclosed makes it impenetrable by dust. It is USB-only, so not ideal for video editors who would be better suited by a FireWire drive. But it is great if you need an affordably-priced external drive to back up your internal hard drive or move files you don't frequently need in order to free up space on your local machine.
Again, it's difficult to rate a hard drive until you've owned it for 4~6 years. But I will give it the benefit of the doubt with a five-star rating because so far I have absolutely no regrets about buying this product.

I bought the 250GB model in November 2008. It was a savings over other products I looked at. My purpose was to use it as an inexpensive backup device to save my data, a portable way of carrying all of my data without lugging a laptop around, and as a tool to use to keep my office & home computers synchronized. It has served me well in each case. I chose to use Microsoft SyncToy 2.0 for the synchronization. It's a "no brainer!" I synch my office desktop to my Passport & my Passport with my home computer & vice-versa. It takes only a few minutes, although I have hundreds of GBs of data & about 120,000 (My Document) files. I also have other data which I do not sync regularly. At any time, except while travelling, my data on the three of these is identical. I also find this extremely valuable in helping me to keep Mp3 files catalogued the same wherever I go. My device is now over 2/3's full. I am looking into buying a 500GB drive when I see a "Special Buy" somewhere.Customer Review: Convenient and ecofriendly

I wasn't really looking for such a nice looking drive to stuff in my pocket. I wanted a fast energy efficient and durable drive on which to backup an iMac. That means 480Mb/s using USB2 because my iMac has no eSATA, FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b), nor even Gigabit Ethernet port. I don't care to install a PCI card with such.
I looked at rugged drives and green drives that are faster, but I'm limited to 480 Mb/s (60MB/s) anyway. This is hot swappable and uses less than the 2.5W available via my USB 2.0 port (500mA at 5W).
This drive is very quiet (quieter than my iMac). The 1 ft cord provided is too short to seriously tangle. A finger on the drive can sense vibration, but it doesn't vibrate any table I've used.
My last backup external drive was accidentally pulled off a counter by the data cord. Now that I realize how absent minded I can be, the ease of putting this drive in a safe place is not merely a travel feature.
