Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA External Hard DriveCustomer Review: Blessing for HD DVR recording Summary: 5 Stars
I've always liked WD products (I have 6 WD external hard drives for my computer). This WD DVR Expander did not disappoint.
Easy hookup - AFTER I followed WD's instructions, NOT Cablevision's.
I am now able to record HD programs at will without worrying about what else I need to delete off of the DVR.
My only regret is that it isn't a terabyte drive, but I went from no free space on my DVR to 70% free, without breaking a sweat.
If you love your DVR, you'll fall in love all over again when ALL of cable is available at your beck and calling. (OK, not ALL, but a helluva lot more)
Customer Review: Easy setup compared to building my own! Summary: 5 Stars
I have COX cable in Phoenix, AZ and I'm using the COX 8240HDC DVR and the DVR expander works fine. I estimate that it increased my capacity from 30 hours of High Def to 120 hours (4 times more).
Because this drive is only 500Gigs, I tried building my own DVR expander by buying an eSATA cable and a Western Digital 1TB drive from Costco but I just couldn't get it to work with my COX DVR.
Save yourself the hassle and frustration and get this DVR expander drive!
3-1-2010 update: The unit died just a little over a year old.
Customer Review: Works as advertised Summary: 5 Stars
Plugged this into my Time Warner-issued Scientific Atlanta 8300HD according to the directions, and in no time I had about five times the storage capacity as before. It's seamless; everything's still all in one menu, and you don't know which drive programs are being stored on. It jus tworks. Operates quietly. I'm not sure why I need the glowing orange CBS eye on the front of it, but it's not overly bright and you get used to it. There's no real reason to put the unit within view since there are no controls to operate, so if the eye bothers you, stash the drive behind your DVR or something.
Customer Review: Works great for PC Summary: 5 Stars
Despite countless reviews and titles that state that this drive is meant for a TIVO, you can definitely use this device for your PC as a media back-up drive. All you need to have is an e-sata port and then just plug it in, and it works. It functions exactly the same as a USB external except it is much faster (3gb/s esata). I have been using it for a small amount of time so far but it has worked great for reformatting my other external to NTFS and for holding all of my HD movies (720p dvd and 1080p bluray). I found it on ebay for about $50 so it was quite a steal!
Customer Review: Works as designed Summary: 5 Stars
I am using with a Tivo Series 3 HD DVR. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. It is not as simple as just plugging in, there are some other things you must do, but it is pretty much idiot-proof. My install took about 10 minutes and a few Tivo restarts. One important note: unless you plan to put this right next to your DVR, buy a longer cable. I bought the 6FT Shielded External Esata Cable M/m by Startech from Amazon, works like a champ. 6FT Shielded External Esata Cable M/m
