First of all I love this product! My Dvr was constantly running short on room. High definition programming takes up a lot of room on your dvr. Mine could only hold around 20 hours of HD content. I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC DVR and have my service trough Time Warner Cable. Set up took almost no time at all. Simply plug unit in and wait for the DVR to boot. My storage usage was 54% before I hooked up the HDD, after, it went down to 13%. I was considering getting the larger one but now realize that the 500 gig one is just fine. I thought it would be easy to add storage capacity to my Cisco Explorer 8240HDC DVR (Provided by TimeWarner Cable). I tried adding a standard Western Digital MyBook drive but could not get it to work. The Cable company helpdesk told me that it was impossible to add capacity to their DVRs. Then I took a chance on this DVR Expander 500. Worked perfectly. Setup in about 5 minutes. Simply follow the instructions (Connect cable, Plug in power, Start DVR, Watch DVR reboot twice - done). The 8240HDC increased my digital recording capacity from 20hrs HD (90 SD) to roughly 80hrs HD (390 SD). Works perect. No problems (after ~2 months)Customer Review: BEWARE: Do NOT Buy Expander Now

Beware that digital rights management by TIVO is implemented by splitting each recording between the TIVO DVR and the Expander shown here. Once hooked up the two devices can not be divorced without losing all you programs on both the TIVO and the Expander.
If you are like my wife you will loose a lot of movies stored for later viewing. Wait for HDD or when your TIVO drive is filled up before committing. YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOSE YOUR EXPANDER BEFORE YOUR TIVO GOES, if you value your recordings. The average life of one of these HD expanders is 3-5 years or, if you have a defective one like mine, less than 2.

I don't know about you but I like to watch TV without the commercials. There are quite a few programs that are in High Def. and take up allot of space and some nights there are two on at a time. Sometimes 3 or 4 programs at a time so the DVR's fill up fast. With the addition of this hard drive you can fit quite a bit more and once installed you don't have to do anything. It works seamlessly and you won't even know it is there. The only difference is it holds a lot more programs. It is easy to install all you have to do is plug it in reboot format when it tells you to and that is it you are done. So easy anyone can do it.Customer Review: No worry! I was very skeptical about the purchase, But My cable provider (Optimum NY) said it was compat so I waited till I caught a good sale $86 @ DELL! And jumped on it! I've had it 4about 2.5 weeks and shes Great! Very small foot print. Every time I record HD content she moves either 1% or 2% opposed to B4 I got her it was 7-8% Big difference! I made a mistake and unplugged my Cable box, after plugging it back in she just told me what happened and told me the right way to disconnect :) And I also unplugged her by mistake, Did not lose any movies :) Go out or order online and get this she wont let ya down!"
