I bought my Mybook about six months ago and it has been working beautifully the whole time. I just filled this drive and will purchase a second one after the holidays. It runs quietly and shuts off when not accessed for awhile. There is a slight pause while the drive spins up when you access it again but not a big deal to me. My experience with this product has been universally positive. I would recommend it to anybody looking for inexpensive mass storage.Customer Review: WD My Book Essential

This hard drive is quiet, has a pleasant circular on/off light which turns itself off when my computer hibernates, and takes up little space on my desk. I respect Western Digital's reputation for quality and I am pleased with the hard drive. My only negative is that the HD had to be formatted for Vista and came with no instructions or format disk to guide me. I finally had to call Western Digital and be "outsourced" for help in installation.Customer Review: Idiot-proof external drive

This turned out to be wicked external hard drive. Its so idiot proof, you just plug it in... and yeah, thats all you have to do and POOF, it works. Really, REALLY easy to use. My only qualm is that the drive doesn't actually have 500GB of space, but actually ~465GB. Not very happy about that, but it's only ~35GB off of 500GB so its not very critical, I just wish it hadn't been advertised as 500GB, instead of it's actual capacity.Customer Review: Good value, easy to use

My friends and I bought these to store our digital and scanned photo collections. The "Book" is really "plug and play." There was none of the frustration sometimes found with new tech devices. If you can manage a USB stick you can manage My Book. If you can't have a computer for each person in the family, a solution is to get a 500 GB individual storage device for each person. The price was right, and the drive so far has performed reliably. I reformatted it when it arrived and didn't install any of the bundled tools, and promptly transferred 400+ gigs of stuff over. It's quick and quiet, and the good ventilation on its case ensures that it never runs too hot for comfort.
Would like to get another one of these so the one I already have won't be too lonely on my desktop.
