Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1U5000Customer Review: Easy and inexpensive! Summary: 5 Stars
So, for less than $200 I could have 500GB? This is not a difficult decision. It arrived within 5 days and was simple to install -- plug in the power cord, and the USB cord to the computer. It comes formatted with fat32 file system. Seemless with all Windows operating systems. If you need file sizes >4GB and are running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, you will probably want to re-format the HD with the NTFS -- an easy process with supplied directions.
One of the best features of this hard drive is that the on/off is controlled by the computer. There's no need to manually turn the HD on or off. Sweet.
Customer Review: Great Hard Drive and this model has on/off switch!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent hard drive and the best part is the on/off switch in the front, which later models eliminated. However, it does have a "sleep" functionality that works well. One flakey thing, though, is if you shut if off manually at the switch, when you shut down your computer, it "wakes up" the hard drive and you have to manually turn off the hard drive again. Small problem, nothing to worry about. Apparently the "sleep" trigger on the hard drive just senses any shutdown or wakeup of the desktop. Overall, a great item to have with lots of storage space and is very, very quiet when its running.
Customer Review: Nice drive - no problems with two Summary: 5 Stars
I have three of these drives, between about six months old and one year old. None of the drives has had problems, although the oldest one is probably the one that counts. I have previously built my own external drives with purchased enclosures and bare drives, but I couldn't beat the capacity and price combination on this product. On a laptop with a USB2 port these drives will backup or image a 50 gig drive in about an hour -- very nice. It is troubling to hear that some people are having bad drives shortly out of the box, but that has not been my experience.
Customer Review: Basic but perfect for me Summary: 5 Stars
The name of the product nails it: essential. If you're looking for an external hard drive that hooks up with a firewire connection or you describe yourself as completely computer illiterate, then this may not be what you want. But if, like me, you are at least somewhat competent with a PC and a simple USB hookup is all you need, then you can't find a better value. Five hundred gigabytes is a good deal of storage, and I've been using it to store backups of all my documents and pictures, as well as weeks' worth of videos. I highly recommend this hard drive.
Customer Review: Six months still running perfectly Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this back on Feb 22 for only $124 brand new right here (Just went to check the records to make sure.)
I've read many of the one and five star reviews and I have to agree with the five stars. This drive has been running quietly, cooly and fast enough for me. It's almost full now so I came back to see if I can get another one and received sticker shock! $350! OUCH.
If you can find it for between one and two hundred bucks then go for it. I'm looking now at a 1TB cause I filled this thing up too quickly.
