I never thought that my hard drive would crash, and that I would lose all my photos, bank records, and important documents. But guess what...it did and I lost everything! So, I learned a lesson the hard way...back up your data! My son and friends recommended the WD MyBook external drive (500GB) as the best back up drive for the money. Amazon's price was the best around and the free shipping sealed the deal for me. It arrived in perfect condition within a few days after I placed my order. I am not a techie, but it was really easy to install. Just plug it in and the software takes care of the rest. Within minutes, I was backing up my photos and files. Bought this when it came out for like $120 a few years ago. Thing has been dropped a few times and still lives. I've taken it to do some DJing at a friends house who has Torq (quite a few times) and no problems. Thing is packed with only 100mb of memory left and no problems.
One note, I wasn't sure about the software that came with so I deleted it off the drive, gave me no problems. Plug & play! (FYI, i'm running XP, P4 3Ghz with 2 gigs of ram and an ATI 1 gig 4600 vid card)
I would totally consider buying another (bigger) Western drive! Only bad thing is trying to find a place to plug in for power as it is not usb powered.

Wow. I got this think for $90 at Office Max. I couldn't decide between this model or another more portable alternative, My Passport. I chose this, because I needed a place to store all my hundreds of movies, songs, and files. Because I have a mac, I don't need to bother with the included (mediocre) software, I just use Time Machine (which comes with the mac.) This drive works like a charm, and it is very silent. I have freed so much space up on my computer, that I now have room for my school files. If you are in high school, and want a place to put your movies, get the Mybook. I used this drive no problem with Vista, and windows 2000. It also worked with Windows 2003 server with some difficulty. It connects to USB fine but needs a new drive letter through disk manager.
I did following to make it working.
1) Start Windows 2003 with out connecting drive.
2) Remove all presently connected USB devices by safely remove.
3) Open disk management and note the current drives and letters.
4) Attach WD external device to USB.
5) It will add a drive with out drive letter.
6) Right click on the drive and add a drive letter.
It should work fine.

I ordered the Western Digital 500GB MyBook external hard drive from Amazon.com, and got a great sale price. When I opened the box, there was a note in it, saying they had inserted a 640 GB unit, at no extra cost!! I am very happy with it. It is quiet, and very compact, and attractive. And it is very easy to install. Just plug it into the wall, and your computer. I like that it also comes with both wires. Lots of times when I bought something electronic, I wound up having to spend more money on a cable, or wire. I will, (and already did) recommend this product to others.
