Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALSCustomer Review: Solid Performer So Far Summary: 5 Stars
When I first received it I installed it in an Other World Computing Mercury Elite Al Pro case(my 3rd) and ran a disk utility(continually performed read/write actions on entire drive) for 2.5 days with out any errors. Then I converted(rip is such an ugly word) about 200 DVDs from my library onto the drive which fills it up. Having owned this drive for almost 4 weeks it is too soon to comment about it's long term reliability.
I opted to try an 'enterprise' quality hard drive over the less expensive models hoping that it perform reliably for at least 3 years. My past experience with low cost hard drives(and external enclosures) from most manufacturers is they fail far to often(usually between 1.5 and 2.5 years). When you consider the time and effort it takes to recover(even if the contents are backed up), cheap equipment is no bargain.
Customer Review: My iMac just received a shot of steroids! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this HD to replace a failed 320g HD in my 2 year old aluminum iMac. All I can say is "wow!". Applications and video open almost instantly and I experience no stutter in movies. I broke open the iMac and installed it myself. I then formatted the drive and restored a disk image backup. I now have a much faster drive and an additional 600g of space.
For the money, I find this hard to beat. Perhaps the 2TB model might be a contender. This drive is fast, has 32mb cache, advanced technologies, and a 5 year warranty.
If I had anything negative to say it would be that it is a little louder than my previous drive but not to the point where it is a big deal. Also, as a performance drive, it uses more power than for example the Caviar Green series. These are minor points and I have to say I 100% recommend this drive.
Customer Review: OK and good service Summary: 5 Stars
I've bought three over the year. I liked the idea of a terabyte drive for $99. I work with multi-gigabyte digital video/animation files, and the drive works ok with them. I don't think it can compete with a high-speed disk-array system or stuff like that, but at $99 its not supposed to. One drive didnt boot and i was able to send it back for another and it all happenned smoothly and their replacement worked fine.
I bought an external wd drive a few years ago and came to dislike WD intensely as a result (a drive so shoddy that the tech support advised i plug in into the wall (!) instead of a power strip. A very poor product, but knowing i could return these drives, and seeing the ok reviews trhey got, i plunged again, and this time wd appears to have a much better product in this.
Customer Review: Runs fine; packaged well Summary: 5 Stars
Nothing technical to add beyond the other excellent reviews here. The drive I received is running perfectly as the User drive in my SSD-booted Mac Pro.
Main reason for adding yet another review is to comment on the packaging, since there are many reviews and photos here of badly packaged drives. This drive, as well as a pair of Caviar Greens in a separate shipment, was well packaged, primarily by Western Digital themselves. Apparently enough complaints about OEM drive packaging (and returns) have got them packing the drives the same as retail drives, other than in generic brown boxes. Each drive was in its own heavy cardboard box with plastic holders isolating it from all sides of the box. These boxes were in turn put inside an Amazon box with ample air packs.
Customer Review: Excellent Drive! Using it in database server! Summary: 5 Stars
When building or upgrading computer, I have always used Western Digital drives. They make great reliable drives, have great customer support, and a pretty good warranty on all their drives.
I bought this drive for a new personal database server I was building. It was suppose to run along side another Western Digital drive (OS drive). Once the system was built and the drives were installed, both had worked flawlessly. The dual processors on the hard drive does in fact make data transfers move slightly more quickly. So far, the various SMART programs and hardware management utilities the server is running reports that both WD drives are in healthy condition. To date, I've moved about a few terabytes of data to and from the drives with no problems.
