Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALSCustomer Review: Fast, quiet and reliable if you get a good one. Summary: 5 Stars
Great drive, but be sure to put it through its paces early to find out if it needs to be replaced. Not only can the drive be bad, but there could have been an issue during the shipping and handling from Amazon. Do a full format, run the WD diagnostic tools and check the S.M.A.R.T. readings on the drive.
If it isn't fast and quiet, there may be a problem. If you're hearing odd clicks from it, that's not a good sign. If the drive turns itself off after some mild activity, it may have a heating problem or bad drive controller. The drive should not get hot enough to need to shut off under regular usage, even if your case doesn't have the best airflow.
My drive shut itself off two times about a week apart and it had decent airflow. None of my other drives have ever done this. Up until it shut down, you'd think the drive was mint. WD will be happy to replace the drive for you.
Customer Review: FRUSTRATION FREE SHIPPING SUCKS IT"S A JOKE Summary: 5 Stars
NEW PACKAGING & AMAZON SHIPPING
DO NOT PURCHASE FROM HERE!!!
Ordered this drive because of the new "Frustration Free" packaging guarantee. Well AMAZON FAILED miserably there! Take my advice and DO NOT FALL VICTIM to this blatant lie. My hard drive was packaged in a box by itself with nothing! I repeat nothing to support the drive. NO air bubble packs, NO styrofoam, NO paper, NOTHING WHATSOEVER.
Drive was placed into cardboard cutouts, which ripped during transit. the drive then fell out of the cutout holding and arrived loose banging around inside the box!
AMAZON NEEDS TO WAKE UP!!!!! HARD DRIVES ARE VERY DELICATE!! Don't give me a guarantee that its going to be easy to open! give me a guarantee it is going to arrive wrapped in SHOCK ABSORBING FOAM as well as working and all together in one piece!
Customer Review: Western Digital: Always Delivers Summary: 5 Stars
About a year ago I bought this drive to replace a broken SimpleTech external hard drive (inside was a Hitachi something or other that broke within a year, I lost nearly 500GB of data). I am extremely impressed. I wear my hard drives pretty hard, I am constantly formatting, and partitioning it (I like to mess with Operating Systems, so I kinda end up breaking them, and having to re-install) and it goes through MANY MANY reads/writes every day.
I have never experienced any access lag, and the read/write speeds for this are much faster than on my Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 250GB drive (I've had that drive for almost 5 years and it is still running great)
I haven't had any corrupted sectors, or any problems of that ilk with this drive. Western Digital has a long reputation of building quality drives, and they definitely deliver on that here.
Customer Review: Packing was actually above par... Summary: 5 Stars
So after reading all the other reviews about the bad packaging I expected the worst packaging ever. This drive actually came in a padded box (with a lot of rubber foam) then that box was put into an Amazon.com shipping box with the air bags stuffed in there so packing was actually better than, uhm.. that egg store.
Popped the drive in with cables I already had because that is what OEM is - just the drive - and it started up fine. I replaced a 2 disk Raid-0 array with this single drive and performance is pretty much the same which is awesome for a single drive.
With Seagate quality totally going through the floor, I am glad to see that WD is coming back strong with good reliable performance drives.
I have an Antec Solo case, which is pretty much silent, so I can hear any type of excess drive noise which this thing does not have.
Customer Review: Great Drive & Best Packaging Job by Far! Summary: 5 Stars
Received the drive in perfect condition and it was double-boxed and the holders in the 1st box held the drive securly in place. I looked at the date on the drive which read Oct. 2009, so it looks like Western Digital or possibly Amazon is now packing these drives up very tight, so they are not simply dropped inside one box like others have claimed in the past. Great job Amazon!
I bought this drive because it seems like the best reviewed Sata drive on the market at present and supposedly the best 7200 RPM drive out. Check out Toms Hardware for a full review of the drive and a comparison to other Sata Drives. They really really like this drive and rate it towards the top for speed and overall performance. I plan on buying another soon as $95 for a 1 TB drive of this calibur with no tax and no shipping charges just can't be beat anywhere.
