Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALS

Customer Review: You can't beat it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have two 640Mb Western Digital internal hard drives and now this 1Tb internal drive. Western Digital are legendary drive manufacturers and despite a few hiccups here and there, they are quite consistent in driving hard at dependable and affordable technology that packs a punch when it comes to performance.

This is the "black" edition, which is recommend for power users such as gamers or people who need a little more speed for video etc.

It's terribly simple to set these drives up in Windows Vista 64Bit Home Premium:

1. Install the drive in a spare hard drive bay and connect a SATA cable and power cable (not supplied) to your motherboard and PSU.
2. Boot, optionally verifying the drive is connected in your BIOS before loading the OS.
3. Run Disk Management in Vista and initialize the drive (right click over the drive icon if initialization is required).
4. Create partitions if desired, name them and Format.

DONE!!

Customer Review: Faster, slightly more "clatter"
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this drive for my Mac Pro (Mac Pros, at least when I bought mine 3 years ago came from Apple with WD 250 GB hard drives). I have installed about 10 WD drives, upgrading this time form the WD 500GB drives, and this drive with its 32MB cache is indeed a bit faster (10-20 percent) than the 500GB. The ONLY downside at all to this drive is that is a bit louder when the heads are seeking, with the drive seek "clatter" more noticeable than the previous 500GB Western Digitals I just replaced (I needed more storage). Not bad tho--it's just that my Mac Pro is absolutely silent and I notice the least little additional sound and never really heard the 500's, the 1TB I hear now--but don't get me wrong it's not bad and there certainly is no drive "whine" when idling--these are quite drives. I guess whizzing across 1TB of data is a little more strenuous on the heads. I have bought about 20 Western Digital drives since 2000 and not one has failed on me--unlike LaCie--ick.

Customer Review: Protect your investment and you won't be disappointed
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first time purchasing a Western Digital Product, and a hard drive as well. I have to say, I was a little skeptical buying this brand after hearing that they fail soon after a month or so. Well it's been over a month and it is still going strong. I use this as my main hd and my original hd as a backup. After transferring my OS onto this one, my boot time is faster, fetching files is faster and my whole computer is pretty much working faster. I definitely recommend purchasing one of these bad boys for extra hard drive space or to replace and existing hard drive. If you decide to purchase one, I highly recommend getting a cooling fan also. I ran this hd at first for only thirty minutes to see how hot it would get. Believe me it was scorching only after thirty minutes. Good thing I bought a hd cooler with it. I think many of them fail because they are not properly ventilated. Either way, highly recommend just protect your investment, get a cooling fan.

Customer Review: Great Product - Amazon changed my mind!
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading all the great reviews of this hard drive. I've decided to buy it from somewhere else due to the negative reviews of the packaging. I'm planning on buying 8 of these drives and after reading someone else's review about buying 8 drives from Amazon, (each drive in an under-padded box, and all 8 boxes in an equally under-padded large box) I will not buy hard drives from Amazon.

Update 12-11-2010:
I decided to give Amazon a shot with my hard drive business so I bought a few drives from them. With Amazon Prime, the free shipping and fast delivery made the prices tough to beat. The drives came their own boxes loosely packed in a larger box that was minimally padded. Each drive was in its own box and held in place within by two foam armatures that immobilized the drive and provided shock mounting for the drive. The protection looked more than adequate. From this experience, I will buy more drives from Amazon.

Customer Review: Needs a SATA Power Connector
Summary: 5 Stars

Product arrived promptly and in good condition, sparely packaged as expected in OEM fashion, no instructions, etc. I'd paid for rapid shipping, since my computer was out of service until I could install the new hard drive - but as it turned out, it requires a "SATA Power connector", something I hadn't encountered before and was not expecting. It was several days before I could get to Radio Shack and pick up the appropriate power cord converter. Once I'd done that, however, all came together easily and quickly in my Linux box.

I think another commenter said the drive was noisy. Mine isn't. I have a Dell box that's very quiet in the first place, and I haven't noticed any additional noise from the new hard drive.

Except for the SATA power connector 'hiccup', I'm well satisfied and my computer is now running noticeably faster than it was with the hard drive that had died, requiring this replacement.
