The drive in question, Western Digital WD1001FALS Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD1001FALS, is the Caviar Black, 3 Gb/s unit.
I installed it in an elderly XP system with SATA-1 (1.5 Gb/s) only ports and had absolutely no problem with the system recognizing, formatting, or utilizing the drive. For this installation, the 'force SATA-1' jumper was not needed on the drive (jumper information for this drive can be found on the WD website).
No heat issues have been noticed, but the computer case involved does have five fans (independent of the power supply) and thus has a good cooling air supply. The new drive also seems not to have added noticeable noise.
Formatting did take quite a long time as expected. In use, the drive performs well - certainly at or above the level of other drives in the system.
It is too soon to discuss longevity since the drive has only been installed for about two weeks at this point. However, I have had good success with WD drives in the past.
Packaging from Amazon was adequate. I would like to see a bit more padding, though.

I was on a budget and didn't want to spend a lot of money on a 1 TB hard drive. The hard drive I purchased from this company for about 50 bucks arrived in just a couple of days from the east coast. Even though it's an internal drive, I had purchased a usb adapter for 10 bucks elsewhere and wanted to use this drive as an external. The usb adapter hooked up easily and when I plugged the drive into the computer, it was recognized but since it was not formatted, it was not quite ready to use. I had to do some homework on the formatting since I hadn't formatted a hard drive in a couple of years and my repertoire of skills have evolved since the last time I did it (Fdisk the last time and Gparted [highly recommended] this time). Using Gparted, I partitioned and formatted the drive. I have a laptop and a desktop computer that are both dual boot Mandriva Linux and Windows XP. I created 4 partitions (one for each operating system) then proceeded to back up each one. Everything worked fine. I now need to decide where to store the drive until the next backup. I'm thinking of a fireproof safe or something. End of story. I didn't need customer service or anything like that but the product was as they represented it and I have no complaints whatsoever.Customer Review: Decent drive, easy to use

Western Digital suffered from a visibility thing for a long time. Their drives would play the grindy game back in the day of 160GB drives, but vast improvements of their technology made these the go-to drives for me when building a system.
I tend to buy a WD Black for any system that doesn't require blazing fast drives that sing and dance in the SSD / 10K RPM data load areas, and frankly not many people "need" that except for overcompensating gamers. The one machine I could possibly use that for is a hyped-up editing system that I need fast access, but frankly I'm not going to load up a 512GB SSD drive with all of my movie-making data just to shave off a few minutes from my edits.
I have battered these little puppies around like you wouldn't believe, dropping them, leaving them in hot cars, and even in one memorable instance forgetting that the drive was NOT a coffee coaster. These drives take it like a Royal Marine and then some. For $99, you -could- pick up a Seagate 1.5TB on special, but remember, that sale price is there for a reason. These are well-built drives, and for the money they will last. The 32MB buffer and the 7200 RPM are the mainstays of my system, and they are the bulk of my storage systems.

I know very little about computers other than our original hard drive was running out of space due to the mass amounts of family pictures and video. I talked to some IT guys at work and they preferred Western Digital over Seagate. I read the reviews and was aware this drive was bulk/OEM and it came with nothing. I didn't purchase the right angle SATA II cable but wish I had; ended up buying it at a local store for a few bucks more. Installed this drive on a 2 yr old Dell XPS which came with an extra power supply cord, chassis and screws. Followed the installation instructions posted in the review "Beginner's guide to adding a second hard drive, May 3, 2009, by Sandstone" with a little help from Window's Vista webpage on how to prepare a new hard drive. I can't stress enough how very easy and painless this all was. Now our computer has amazing speed using the original 250 MB drive for program and operating software only and this new 1 TB drive for storage. The price was great and has even dropped $5 since I purchased this drive. I might buy another to replace our original 250 MB hard drive because the specs of these drives are so much faster. I've been building systems for a few years and I remember when I first started, I was either going to go with Seagate or Western Digital hard drives. Someone once told me to go with Western Digital and you'll never look back! Well, that is certainly the case. I have 4 Western Digital Hard Drives and they are amazing. They are great quality, performance, and reliability that you need in a gaming system or as a simple home computer. I've never had any problems with any of the hard drives and I definitely make sure they are running cool. My hard drives range from 2 500GB SATA 2's, this one, and a 300GB Velociraptor. I never had any problems with them, and they work instantly. The drives are a piece of cake to install. Presently I have this product and the Velociraptor in my HAF 932 case. They are kept extremely cool. With the hard drive vents on the side, any warm air, exits through there. The casing the drives come in are great; no vibrations, no noise. I love the bubble wrap they come in :)
I've used Seagate, Western Digital, Hitatchi and a few others. In my honest opinion, I love Western Digital. I've never had any problems, issues, or crashes with WD. Highly recommened!
