Customer Review: Outstanding & Easy PS3 Hard Drive upgrade!
Summary: 5 Stars

GREAT option for those who wish to upgrade the Hard Drive of their Playstation 3! I ordered mine from Amazon.com Monday morning (Nov. 3rd) and received it in excellent condition by UPS Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 5th) w/ standard shipping to NC. Great price and shipping from Amazon.com!

I have the 80GB MGS4 Bundle and not that many demos, videos, mp3s, and pictures to start with, so I figured it was a good idea to upgrade after reading the Reviews listed here and on other PS3 web-sites. 320GB would be perfect for me I figured for now and in the forseeable future. I am NOT a "computer tech" or even anyone with the slightest experience in working on computers/gaming systems, so this item sounded like just the thing for me (AND IT IS). By only using pages 16-18 in the PS3 Safety and Support guide, a simple 4GB USB to back up my data, and a small Phillips head screwdriver, I successfully backed-up, removed, changed-out, re-installed the hard drive(s) of my PS3 and restored all of my PS3 data with NO PROBLEMS whatsoever! Couldn't be any easier, in my opinion... While I'm sure there are other hard drives out there for the PS3, this one is perfect for me and my PS3 needs. A BIG thanks goes out to all of the previous Amazon.com Reviewers for the info!

Customer Review: Perfect for PS3
Summary: 5 Stars

I wanted to utilize the full power of my PS3, but with the 40MG hard drive that came with the PS3, I felt that I would not be able to store all my music and photos. It was super-easy to swap out the hard drive, and I am by no means a techie! I found simple instructions on the web, but it was so simple that I probably could have done the guy-thing and tried without. I did have to delete all the music and anything not vital from the original hard drive before doing the swap. I could not find a way to save what was on the hard drive to my pc. I had to back-up to my PSP. Luckily, I had an empty 8MG, so I didn't have to delete too much from the original hard drive. When beginning the back up, the PS3 will check with the PSP and tell you if there isn't enough room.
The back-up took 20-25 minutes. The, with a small screw driver, you loosen 5 screws, swap hard drives, and start-up your PS3. The PS3 tells you the hard drive needs to be formatted. All you do is hit X to proceed, and that takes all of 30 seconds. Then you go to the back up utility of the PS3 and choose restore from the PSP. Another 20-25 minutes, and everything is back! Except now, you have a whopping 320MG to store whatever you want on your PS3!

Customer Review: Easy installation and Setup in a PS3
Summary: 5 Stars

My initial hesitancy to purchase this drive didn't come from my experience with Western Digital hard drives. It came from Amazons hard drive shipping policy that apparently in the past was quite rough on the drives. The drives used to ship with an airbag after being plastic wrapped to a piece of cardboard. Now they ship in a box within another box that is held in place with two perfectly placed plastic spacers. If this is the newest Amazon shipping policy I think that they deserve some recognition as this system is a drastic improvement.

The drive itself is more than adequate for use in the PS3, in fact from my observations I think the WD actually runs cooler than the Seagate HD it replaced. This is the second 320 gig hard drive I have purchased to replace stock a stock PS3 hard drive. After a combined 1200 hours of run time I can safely attest that the drives do their jobs with distinction.

The drives are SATA so the install in a PS3 and even a PC are simply plug and play. The drives take longer to mount properly then they do to connect to the MB, or in the case of the PS3 the drive mount tray. If I ever upgrade another PS3 I will most likely buy another of these hard drives to go in it.

Customer Review: So far so good
Summary: 5 Stars

This seems to be a great little (size) big (capacity) hard drive. Of course by the time anyone reads this review 320 Gb will probably be miniscule, but at the time of writing it is a formidable hard drive. I installed this in my Macbook Pro in about an hour, using online instructions (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Pro/Hard-Drive/85/5). Another helpful article can be found at: http://www.macworld.com/article/58066/2007/05/macbookprohdupgrade.html.

The only downside is that my battery life is considerably shorter. That is contrary to other reports I've read on the internet, so I suppose everyone's experience is different.

You will also need a small Philips screwdriver and a #6 Torx. If you want to keep the data on your existing HDD and transfer it, you will also need an enclosure (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZHEGB2/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title) is what I used, also reviewed on Amazon.

NOTE: Everything I've read on the web states that this install will void any remaining warranty on your system which is definitely something to consider if you've shelled out serious clams for Apple Care.

Customer Review: Works great for PS3
Summary: 5 Stars

I just replaced mine 40GB PS3 drive a couple weeks ago with this and it worked fantastically.

Just a few notes about the process. You *can* re-download anything you have purchased, but a better way is to do a full harddrive backup using the PS3 backup utility. I didn't have a spare hard drive or flash drive large enough to accomplish this, but I do have a 60GB 5th Gen ipod, and it worked fine. There are plenty of tutorials online that show how to do it, including a great one on youtube that helped me out.

Two things to know if you go that route, make sure to sync all your trophies on all accounts before you backup, as all trophy data is NOT backed up. When you play each game for the first time after you backup/restore, it will reinstall the trophies on your local system and then you must re-sync to pull them back down from the PSN.

Unfortunately, this will mean that trophies you got on games you rented or borrowed will never show up on your local PS3 system again (unless you re-get the game), but they still show on your PSN profile and factor into your overall ranking.

Hope this helps.
