Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital 320GB Scorpio Blue SATAII 5400RPM 2.5IN 8MB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive WD3200BEVTCustomer Review: Great product + price + Amazon service! Summary: 5 Stars
Recently my PS3 HDD started dieing (random freezes, would need to run the utility to rebuild the filesystem to get it to reboot), so I made a backup and started looking for replacements. After seeing reviews and the price on this (I can't believe how far drive prices have fallen), it was a no brainer to order this. The original 80 gig drive finally kicked the bucket a day later, and I eagerly awaited this.
Unfortunately, the free shipping option was through USPS whom I've had problems with before with speed/condition of packages received. They claimed to have delivered the package on a day I was out of town, and it was not there when I got back late that night. I'm not assuming foul play on their part (though I don't rule it out), but my guess is the delivery guy left it outside my door and pretty much anyone at or visiting my complex could have picked it up. Keep in mind I live in an apartment complex on the first floor with open breezeways so anyone walking by my building could have seen/grabbed it (I actually live in a good neighborhood but nowhere is perfect), and the UPS deliverers all have the sense to leave packages with the complex main office with a note on my door (I called the office and they didn't have it either, so it's not just a case of a lost note).
After several DAYS of runaround with USPS and getting nowhere I called Amazon up. Within 5 minutes they said they were going to send me a free replacement with next-day shipping. It came via UPS and needless to say I got it today, installed it, restored my backup data, and my PS3 has never run smoother.
So to sum up: Great product + price, Amazon gave me AMAZING customer service, my local USPS office sucks.
Customer Review: buy if you own a macbook Summary: 5 Stars
i will make this short as possible. i own a macbook that i bought in 06' that i used heavily during college. it was the first ones with an intel processor and last summer the hard drive crashed. well i finally got around to fixing it and i searched amazon for a decently priced hard drive and came across this one. received it and popped it in and it works great now. for people looking to fix an old mac laying around and you want to do a fresh install of mac os x then hopefully you read this. since i got a new hard drive and already have another mac that is my main computer hence why i did a new install of the os. to do this you will need a screw driver size 000 and a torx wrench size t8.
1. take the battery out.
2. unscrew the three screws that hold the L shaped metal retainer. behind that retainer is where you can pop the ram out and on the left side of that is where you can pull the hard drive out.
3. pull the white tab and the hard drive comes comes out.
4. unscrew the metal casing that houses the hard drive with the torx wrench and put it on the new hard drive.
5. put the new hard drive in.
6. boot up your macbook and either a) put in the mac os x install cd or b) hold the option key if booting the os from a external hard drive/flash drive.
7. the install will start and you have to go up top to Disk Utility.
8. disk utility will find your new drive and will be listed on the panel to the left.
9. select the hard drive and you have to ERASE it. doing so will format the drive.
10. go back to the install setup screen and it will ask you to to select the drive that you want to put the os on.
11. it'll display your drive. select it and you're done.
Customer Review: Highly recommend for Sony PS3 Summary: 5 Stars
Actually, I bought this drive a few months ago and it's still a very worthwhile upgrade today. I run YDL 6.1 Linux as well on my PS3 on a 10GB partition and the balance (remember, you lose on average of 7% of usable space due to formatting) goes to the console for all the PSN downloads (DLC, wallpapers, and themes in addition to whatever ever music and photo files you may wish to store on it as well)... and still have room for much, much more!
The PS3's latest 2.60 firmware has a slick photo gallery application that could chew up disk space, obviously depending on the amount of photos you have. I store quite a bit of digital media on USB external HDDs in addition to a network attached server however with this drive, you're pretty much assured that it stays "future-proof" for as long as possible... until the PS4 arrives.
Finally, it doesn't make much more sense to pay the extra $100 for the available 160GB PS3 when you could grab this drive and double that capacity for less and not void any warranties. Again, a very worthwhile and simple upgrade if you're thinking of doing this to your PS3. You really won't benefit very much with a 7,200 RPM with the PS3 either, so save your cash especially since this drive is whisper quiet as compared to a 7,200 drive. Also, you don't need the retail package version that you would find in let's say a Best Buy because if you're intending to use this with a PS3, all you need is the drive itself so the retail package with cables, instructions, etc. is not needed at all so you may as well pocket the savings and sell your old drive on eBay or craigslist.
Customer Review: WD3200BEVT Hard Drive Summary: 5 Stars
Hello, I just wanted to say that; If you are considering a new hard drive, I don't see how you could ever do better than this one. I used Apricorn to clone my old drive (OEM 'seagate 120gb') and it did exactly what it was supposed to. This 320gb drive is faster than the old one and does seem to be running cooler. Great price, Great product.
I am unable to write one of the 'tech' reviews as I am just an old guy with a laptop. This drive arrived wrapped in 4 full inches (deep) of the good bubble wrap.
I opened it up, plugged it into the Apricorn box thing, and cominced to clone my drive. That took something like 50 minutes. Now came the hard part, remove and replace, so I took a deep breath and opened my computer up. The drive replacement was very easy as it was quite obvious what I needed to change over (i.e. the caddy, and the pin adapter). Put the new drive in, cover on and snugged down. I turned the computer on and waa-laa, Windows XP starting up according to instructions by Apricorn.
If you are not one of the folks who do this sort of thing all the time and just want to upgrade your laptop, then this is for you. Simple and straight forward. Pay attention to your cloning software, do what it tells you, make sure you don't get carried away with tightening the tiny screws, USE THE CORRECT SIZE PHILLPS HEAD SCREWDRIVER.
Good luck and I honestly hope your experience is a good as mine has been so far. Take care folks.
Thanks Western Digital.
Customer Review: The PS3 Replacement Hard Drive for casual to hardcore gamers Summary: 5 Stars
Like everyone else stated this is THE PS3 replacement hard drive. Whether you got the 60, 80 or 120 GB drive to start out with, you will quickly see (even if you are not a hard core gamer) that it will begin filling up. When you take into account all of the data you can store on your PS3 like pictures, music, etc. you also need to keep in mind that most games these days require a multi GB execution file be loaded onto your hard drive when you play them for the first time. Because of this, I noticed how my drive began filling up quickly (I have about 6 games and about 10 GB's of music and pictures) and before I noticed it I had 34 GB of space used. This drive and the installation process overall is extremely easy (less than 10 minutes excluding backup time) just please be careful and use a good small phillips screwdriver because the blue screw inside the PS3 that releases the drive casing as well as the 4 smaller screws that hold the drive in the casing are VERY EASY TO STRIP. It has proved to be extremely reliable and the PS3 fomatted it automatically when I booted up after installation. This should provide the casual to average gamer with plenty of room for quite a while. I would also recommend (as other reviews thankfully did) purchasing an external case for the old drive so you have a small but functional backup drive especially since this stuff should not end up in the trash. Reduce, re-use re-cycle as Jack Johnson says. PEACE
