Pretty much plug and play. Useable right out of the box, Easy to format and rename to whatever you want to name it. I recomend installing the Western Digital drive diagnostics and tools, they help with partitioning the drive and have other nice applications later on down the road. Copy the WD files to a folder on your pc to save them,( or you can download them from WD later ) then format the drive so you have maximized your space on it, and there you have it. I use them for storing my downloaded movies and such. This is my third WD 1TB drive and all are working well a year later.Customer Review: Does what it's supposed to...

The one drawback I can think of for this device goes hand-in-hand with one of the perks of this device, so I can't really complain about anything.
That drawback is the lag time experienced when accessing the drive after a period of inactivity. While this can sometimes be annoying, I suspect that it is because the computer is allowing it to remain inactive for reduced power consumption while it isn't being used.
This is my second WD 1TB My Book Essential Edition and I hope it turns out to be as predictable and reliable as the first.

I got this from a local PC store here in the Philippines... all I can say it met my expectations to be my primary back-up of all our PC / Laptops. Out of the box it worked flawlessly and been detected by all our computers even the oldest Pentium 3 computer.
The only thing I don't like about this external drive is that it is a fingerprint magnet... a very minor negative aspect that are being overshadowed by its ease of use.
I will definitely by another one of this product to be use as my primary backup for my Asus eeepc netbook

I got this as a gift for someone else. I had to set it up though. That was easy. Computer detected it with no problem. Transfer speed is fast enough. No real complaints. You don't even have to use the software that's preloaded in it. I got SyncToy from Microsoft's site to handle all the syncing.
It's does give off some heat, which is good since it's not boiling inside itself. I'll come back and vilify this thing if it breaks. I know this may be obvious to some users, but don't install programs to this thing. Just use it for storage.

I bought this hard drive to store my home videos. I am very pleased with it. It is fast and quiet. I liked it so much that I bought a second one to store all of my CD's on. I had a 750gb hard drive that I used for this but it was very noisy. I loved the quietness of this one. It's a great hard drive. My son, who works for a computer company that does IT work for small businesses used it to back-up a hard drive from a company that he was working on and re-formatting and he was impressed with the speed of this Western Digital hard drive.
