The device goes into standby-mode after about 15 minutes of not being used which is quite nice for a backup device that mostly just sits idle. The wake-up time is very quick since there seems to be no noticable delay.
I am currently using this device as a backup for my Windows Home Server and it works fantastic. Would recommend this device very highly.
Update:
I have had this device for about 1 year now and it is still going strong. I just sits quietly on the floor in the corner and works. What more could you want (especially based on my experience of very limited lifespan of large HDD's)!

I purchased this hard drive to be paired with my Apple Airport Extreme to host my Time Machine backups. This gives me an external backup without the wires. I tell you, it's very, very nice.
Here's how I did it:
1. format the hard drive to HFS+ format.
2. connect to the Airport Extreme
3. Turn on Time Machine
4. Select the network volume.
It was worth not spending the extra money for the hard drive pre-formatted for Macs, and I have the Western Digital reliability. Oh, and this was probably the most reasonably priced hard drive on the market when I purchased it.

Just as the title suggests, this external hard drive is just as expected. I never planned to use it to increase my computers running speed, I just needed a place to store files like pictures and movies that I won't be looking at frequently. I've had it for over a month now and still no problems. The only hinderance is that it has to be plugged into the wall at all times (When in use). I knew that while purchasing it however, so there is no misleading fault of the seller.
A very good hard drive, and very inexpensive. I would highly recommend this to anyone who simply needs a place to store files.

This is my third WD External HD in 3 years and I haven't any complaints.
It's fast, does it's job, and has plenty of ventilation area. I am not so keen on the Memeo software it comes with, but that's easily fixed.
I'll be buying another of these soon for a mirror backup on the other 1tb I have. It's about the size of a 1000 page paper back novel, and fairly weighty. Doubt it would like to be dropped though, the plastic doesn't seem very giving ;-). Not one you would want to carry around much. I think I'd get passport if you are moving around with it regularly.

I have had this WD 1TB HD for over 6 months with no problems. I routinely unplug directly from my desktop with no problems with lost data or error messages and I have no problem storing or transferring data to/from it. It has a very functional design (can be stored vertically to allow more than one HD to stack side-by-side, or put horizontally without the wires getting snagged/pulled out). I have nothing bad to say...it looks good, it works as advertised, and plugs right in with no problems. FYI, I run a Dell XPS with Vista and an older Toshiba laptop with XP, no problems on either.
