I waited over a year to purchase substantial personal external storage, and I have been delighted with the My Book 1TB volume. It was easy to plug and play with my HP tablet, and the transfer rate for files from my hard drive or an external CD/DVD drive has been admirable.....having tons of uncompressed music from the massive CD collection on a single drive has been a low-priority wish for ages, and now I can do it.
My only complaint is the backup and recovery software bundled on the drive that installed on my laptop. It slowed my machine by revving up in the background at start-up, and it's not like I *need* the planned redundancy; so, I uninstalled it after a week. Other than that.... and it's my own fault for letting the apps install... I'm beyond happy with my purchase.

For $[...], it's a steal.. especially now when prices are going down on external harddrives. I don't like the idea of needing to plug it in to a power source because then i wouldn't be able to take it anywhere i wanted and use it out on the street, but that's alright because the purpose of a 1tb harddrive is to back up memory. it's getting a 5-star rating because it works with Time Machine on mac, which is what I have, AND a few days after i got it and backed up everything on my computer, my harddrive died. so i was really fortunate to have acted sooner and had backed everything up because nothing was recoverable from the fried up harddrive. I have a 120 to 80 gb wd harddrive, which i got for about [...] bucks, and it works great as well, so i really like Western Digital products so far.Customer Review: Awesome Hard Drive - Have it for over 1 year.

I've had this hard drive for over a year now and it works great! I have about 400GB of data on it and never have a problem with the speed or reliability. I had 2 other smaller external hard drives (120GB and 160GB) and I ended up transferring all the data from them onto MyBook. It is now much easier for me to look for data having everything on one hard drive as opposed to 3. The hard drive turns on as soon as the computer turns on and stays turned on. Since I don't use it much, I usually just unplug the USB cable so that the hard drive doesn't turn on with the computer. I must say that it would be great if the hard drive was powered just by the USB cable and no power adapter but its not a huge problem. I would definitely recommend this hard drive to my friends.Customer Review: using on a Mac

I bought this disk to use on a Macintosh (running Leopard). I immediately repartitioned (which reformats) the disk using the Disk Utility.app in the Utility folder as I understand that otherwise I could not store files larger than 4 GB on it (that may be an error in my understanding). The downside is that I cannot now move it to a windows computer (unless that computer has third party software on it to read Mac formats). The disk works perfectly, and I can put files larger than 4 GB on it.
I have a second such disk attached to my Airport Extreme router, and it too works perfectly. Time Machine recognizes both as disks on which to do backup.
The disks are very quiet and take very little desk space.

I have had this hard drive for about a month now and have had no real problems with it. It is very quiet and has not had any hiccups. The only thing I have noticed may be a problem with Windows Vista. When the computer goes to sleep (hibernate and off works fine) the hard drive becomes unrecognizable when booting back up. However, all you have to do is unplug the USB port and then plug it back in and it works like a charm. Also, the drive will park itself after a while and when accessing it again it takes a few seconds for it to start running again. Other than that it works like it is supposed to. Running movies off of it works without stuttering. It also looks great. I would definitely recommend this product!
