I have owned my WD for nearly a year now. I am not the greatest with computers, but this external is extremely easy. I own a dell and the moment I plugged it in my computer it opened up the page to set up registration and I was ready to go within 2 minutes. I easily copied all my documents into external and set up all my itunes songs/videos to be on my external which opened up a lot of memory in my computer. I also set my SLR camera to download all new photos directly into a file in my WD so I don't waste space on my computer with RAW images. Currently my external is connected to my computer all the time, so it shuts off/on along with my computer. Fingerprints do stick to the sides, but it seems to not catch any dust at all (unlike my giant tower that I dust twice a week that sits right next to it).

This is the second WD external drive in my lineup, the successor to a 160gb MyBook Essential that I purchased several years ago and was very pleased with. I've only had this drive for a few months, but have been happy with the speed and reliability to date.
This drive is also at the right price point in early to mid-2009, with the 2tb version costing more than double, and the 500gb version costing only 25 percent less for half the storage.
The drive comes pre-formatted FAT, so using it for storage of large media files requires a quick format to NTFS, which is relatively fast and painless.
As superficial as it might sound for such a utilitarian device, the design is pretty sharp with the black gloss finish and the blue line of light that indicates the drive's activity.

i have had this drive for almost exactly a month now. I recieved it ahead of delivery estimate in perfect condition. I split it into 3 partitions right away and it works great. I use one partition for time machine for my macbook, another partition for storage, and i installed Mac OSX on the last partition as a failproof backup. i cant comment too much on the read/write speeds, but i have found them more than satisfactory for what i use the drive for. I dont transfer many files very often, yet if im watchin a movie from the drive i cant even notice when time machine does its backup. i initially backed up about 220 gb of data using time machine; i just started the initial backup, went to bed, and it was done when i woke up. so far this drive is great, ill post more about how it holds up in a few months.Customer Review: Plug & Play out of the Box

I have five WD external HDs on my network; and all are of the My Book design with USB 2 interface. Like all WD drives, this baby is reliable and ready to go out of the box. Just Plug it in, opt for the optional software (backup etc) by name brand vendors and your're good to go. Except for a external power supply that went out (I belive after a major storm without surge protection) the remaining units, less than 1 TB or less in capacity, all have been running constantly without problem for years on end. No noises, no problems. That's been my experince. I was also able to order a replacement WD power supply at the WD online store. It was fast and simple and I now have the WD unit up and running after a short few day shipping delay; its still running strong with the replacement external power supply!Customer Review: Excelente Producto

Se probó y funciona correctamente, el producto es bastante sencillo ya que no requiere instalación, funciona como un pendrive, lo conectan y listo, funciona con PC y MAC, lo usé como Time Machine de mi Mac y como respaldo para el PC, de tamaño es un poco grande lo que lo hace poco portatil, pero es una excelente opción si lo que desean es tenerlo en su oficina o casa para respaldo de datos, mas no como un DD portatil o viajero. Su apariencia fisica es bastante atractiva y hará un perfecto juego con sus demás equipos electrónicos en su oficina.
