Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext Hdd

Customer Review: Good price. Works well.
Summary: 5 Stars

This hard drive is quiet, small, nice looking, a great price for 1 TB, and so far (just approaching three weeks now) is working flawlessly. But if you are using this hard drive with an Apple Macintosh computer, and you want this hard drive to be able to take advantage of the significant advantages offered by the Mac, before you put this drive to use, make sure that you re-format it (it takes less than a minute) as described by at least one other amazon.com reviewer on these pages. The way you re-format this for the Mac while extremely easy, is not obvious or in just the usual way, and you probably need to look up that advice in these reviews before you waste your time with the more typical Mac formatting processes, which does not work. It's a shame that the instructions don't make clear that 1) This hard drive will work with a Mac with the formatting that comes with the hard drive, but that 2) It is easy and to your advantage to first re-format the drive if you plan to use it with your Mac. Needless to say, the seller or manufacturer should also add the simple but atypical re-formatting instructions for the Mac, as I've heard that without knowing exactly how to reformat this hard drive for the Mac, some purchasers have been frustrated trying to re-format it for the Mac in the conventional way, and therefore have unnecessarily returned the drive to the seller as either not being "friendly" with their Mac or as not being Mac formatable (if there is such a word) and therefore not compatible with their Mac.

Customer Review: An excellent device for creating backups. WDH1U10000N
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using two of these devices at work to perform weekly backups on about fifteen Linux (Intel) computers for nearly four months. I first had to reformat them to a ext3 Linux file system. After that, literally, plug and play for our Red Hat boxes. I cannot speak for the speed, with most backups, who cares how fast, if they are completed without errors and the backup device is reliable. What impressed me was / is the durability of these things. I have connected and disconnected this drive many times (500+?) to computers that were powered up with no problems. The connectors seem rugged, often I need (in a hurry) to carry the drive around with the power adapter dangling (not recommended). The backups we do, verify the checksum after a backup and so far have shown zero (0) errors. I ordered one of these today so that I could use it at my home to back up my two Win-XP machines and my one XP/Linux notebook computer. I gave the 'Software' rating five stars only because no software is needed. :) This device may not be sleek or cool but it is reliable and feels like a good book in your hands. I do have five years experience with other WD external backup devices and have never had any bad feelings with WD.

Customer Review: Works With Dish Receivers
Summary: 5 Stars

I am using this with the Dish Vip612 receiver and its my second HD I have attached to it. I can't attest to longevity but can tell you all I did was connect it and the receiver recognized it and formatted it, no problem. I have 2 other WD 750GB HDs I am using with Dish receivers with little problem. The only thing that happens is that they do not go into sleep mode and if not used for awhile, you have to recycle the power to them becauswe they are sluggish on playback or don't respond at all. I am just starting to add more HDs to my receivers and the set up I have is to add a USB hub. I am using the CyberPower High-Speed 7-Port USB Hub. The receiver only recognizes one HD at a time, so you have to use a single disk HD like this one. And if you have several connected to a hub, it will only see one so the solution I have used is to plug them into a American DJ PC-100A 8 Channel Power Strip with Lighted Toggles and turn on the HD I am using, while powering down the others. This is cheaper and you can add more HDs then with a USB switch.

Customer Review: Great product
Summary: 5 Stars

I have purchased at least 10 My Book Essentials over the past few years including several of these 1TB. They are very durable (no problems yet!) and are pretty simple to use. These drives are huge in capacity and cheap and reliable - so much so that I literally mirror every MyBook I by onto a second MyBook to protect against fire, theft or drive failure (I keep the backup offsite). Also they are handsome looking drives and when you have 2 or more lined up in a row on a shelf, they do look very nice and neat, and run very quietly.

My only complaint is that they come preformated as FAT32 instead of NTFS which limits the size of any one file on the drive to 4GB, but increases the compatibility across various operating systems. If you are storing photos or music on it, no biggie since those files are really tiny by comparison... FAT32 probably wont cause you any problems. But if you are storing family videos, databases or other large data files, you might consider setting it up as NTFS from the start.

Customer Review: As Advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

Everything is as advertised. Plug it in and it works. No hassle. Case is a little larger than some. For me this is a plus because I can set it upright without a stand. This drive is rock solid stable sitting upright. Most bases rarely work well and are usually at least 3X the width of the drive. I always seem to misplace the base as I move the drive from one place to another and then I am stuck using the drive in the horizontal format. Never a concern with this drive. In the uprighr format, it takes up very little desk space. Actually, less space than other "slimmer" drives I own when used with their required base. Makes no noise at all. Nothing complicated about this device. It just does it's job as advertised by the manufacturer and Amazon. I have used numerous external hard drives, including firewire devices, and this one is faster than any drive I have ever used. Will definetly purchase same or similar product from WD if I ever need another external hard drive.
