Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext Hdd

Customer Review: Large capacity for storing files
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned this drive for about six months so far, and I have not had any problems with it. I use this with my WDTV player, and have not had any problems that people have previously stated, like long upload times to catalog all the media. The transfer speeds are as fast as can be expected from USB 2.0, and connecting the external drive is a quick and painless procedure, especially considering that I have to haul it back to my computer from the entertainment center when I want to upload my latest batch of media files I've backed up or compiled.
I own both a Mac and a PC, and I have not had any substantial difficulties plugging the player into either and reading/writing files. However, I will note that on a Mac, I am unable to transfer any file that is 4+ GB onto the drive. I have to transfer it onto my PC first before it will successfully transfer. I believe this is just a limitation of the Mac though, as it also fails to write onto other USB devices, while the PC does not have any difficulties. (Not taking sides, I enjoy both for their strengths)

People have complained about HD failure, but Western Digital has been my favorite choice. Both my laptops have WD drives, and two out of three of my other external harddrives are WD as well. They take serious beatings (two are portable, and they've seen their fair shares of drops and bangs) and have not failed me yet, while Seagate and Hitachi drives have sputtered out (but to their credit, I was still able to salvage all data)

What I enjoy about this drive is that it will automatically go into a standby mode, much like a general portable harddrive. This may just be a feature that's included with all new desktop externals, but my other one and several other models I've seen years prior all have on/off switches, which have become a hassle now that they're contained in the deeper recesses of my desk space.

Customer Review: A data center on a shelf
Summary: 5 Stars

It is very hard to argue with the amount of storage that one of these drives offer. If you have been in the industry for awhile, you can remember when a terabyte of data meant an entire data center of storage!

These drives are quite and they format to NTFS quickly as long as you remember to specify quick format!! I have been pleased enough with the drive that I now own 6 of them. My laptop now has 6 terabyte of storage to work with! Since I do a lot of music and video work, that is important to me. Considering the fact that these drives now run about $229 when on sale, why would you not buy one?

Keep in mind that if you connect multiple drives, you will want to use different controlled ports on your computer; not just a USB hub (the reason is each dedicated port of a USB 2.0 can only work at a total of 400 MB/S. That means if you have multiple drives on the same controlled port that they are sharing that speed (this will really show up if you are moving data from one drive to another on the same hub). Remember, having 4 ports on your computer does not mean that they are 4 seperately controlled ports! Check your users manual or call technical support for your product to see how many seperately controlled ports you really have.

I have now moved all of my video, photos, and music to these drives (3 terabyte) and use the other three terabyte as mirrored drives (fail safe)and it is all easily accessable on my computer and on my network through my computer.

I have had the first drive for 5 months now and have added the others as they went on sale. I have not had any boot issues (mentioned in other reviews) and all of the lights go off when the computer is powered down. I am running Vista Ultimate with all updates and I am using an IBM ThinkPad with current BIOS.

Great drives!!!

Customer Review: VISTA: My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I have 2 of these 1 TB drives which I purchased about a month ago. I use them with Two Dell Inspiron 1525 with Vista Home Premium, One Acer Travelmate 4150 with XP Home edition and a Western Digital HD media player.

Both units arrived nicely packaged and in working order. They came readily formatted (exFAT) which worked fine for my purposes. If your unit somehow arrives unformatted, (another one of my WD units did!) it's relatively easy to do so to NTFS, which is supposed to be more secure. NTFS works just as well unless you need to hook up a NAS device, then exFAT would be better since all the NTFS permissions would be bothersome. You would recognize it's unformatted easily because your drive won't appear on 'my computer' when you plugged it in. No big deal but I hope Western Digital would be more consistent with all their models. I found a very helpful video on formatting on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JyOPfBgGXs&feature=PlayList&p=A145F67EC71FD5F1&index=5

I've had these on standby, hooked up to my Western Digital WDTV Media Player, almost all the time. The drives run much cooler when compared to my 500GB USB LaCie Hard Drive, Design by F.A. Porsche, which is also by the way, a great product, having survived heavy usage for more than a year.

No file loss or crashes so far (knock on wood) but its always advisable to have a backup. As good as it gets for hard-drives but its never a question of 'if' your drive fails but 'when' so remember to back-up your data. Yes, I would 100% buy Western Digital again..solid product, competitively priced. Enjoy! Hope this helps.

Customer Review: I Couldn't Imagine a Better Deal for the Money
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased my Western Digital external hard drive almost two months ago, and so far it has been nothing but a blessing. It couldn't be simpler to install. You just hook up the included USB cable, plug in the power supply and you're good to go. Windows should automatically detect when the drive is plugged in so no trouble there. Although, I will say that the optional AutoBackup and AutoSync software that comes on the drive is both annoying and completely pointless since you have to pay to use it after a 30 day trial. Other than this slight drawback there is nothing else negative I have to say.

The drive is quiet, fast (considering the fact it is USB), and reliable. It doesn't generate much heat, but just to be safe I have placed a small desk fan behind it. I'm hoping this will greatly extend the life of the drive. I also love the blue light on the front of the casing. It blinks when files on the drive are being accessed, and I find this to be a very welcome feature.

My brother bought an Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275 off of Amazon, and it burned out within two weeks of use. I've been accessing my WD almost 24/7 for the past two months and have not experienced so much as a glitch, much less total drive failure. No telling how long the drive will maintain this level of perfection, but as for now I am totally comfortable stamping it with an A+ rating, especially since it only costs a little over a hundred bucks.

Customer Review: PS3 & X360 both can read this drive easy as just plug and play
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Maxtor 500gb and Seagate 500gb and both are awesome, but PS3 and X360 can't read them at all which is stupid, I want to watch movies I have download on my HDTV and like I said, PS3 and X360 doesn't even read both of them until I bought this WD hard drive.

I know that if I format the Seagate and Maxtor to FAT32, my PS3 and X360 could read them but I only have a Sony Vaio laptop and it doesn't let me format them to FAT32. Both of them stuck at default NTFS which was unreadable on Ps3 and X360.

The best thing about this WD hard drive was that its way more stronger than the Maxtor & Seagate both. I have drop it twice at 3 feet height from a table and hit the carpet and still work fine. My bro has knock it down from the 3 feet table three times already and it bang hard on my caret and it still work fine. All the data still work fine.
So I order a 500gb WD as well.
Both work fine and I sold both Maxtor & Seagate, they aren't that good.
I won't said the WD is better than the Seagate and Maxtor, but i like the WD better because it was FAT32 which like I said above, my PS3 and X360 can read it easily and just plug and play which I could watch my movies and videos I download from the net on my HDTV.

Any hard drive is okay, but if you want instant FAT32, this WD is the best t pick up.

The only bad thing about this WD was that the transfer rate was too slow.
20 mins for 5gb is not good.
Anyway, the WD was awesome.
I just think the 500gb transfer faster than the 1TB.
