Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Wacom Intuos3 6 x 8-Inch Pen Tablet

Customer Review: An invaluable editing tool for digital photography
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a serious photographer with years of experience in film and 5+ years fully immersed in the digital world. I resisted the use of a pen tab for years and needlessly struggled to achieve accurate photo edits using a mouse. About a year or so ago, I took the plunge and accepted the fact that there would be a new learning curve with the tablet.

I'm only sorry that I didn't make the switch earlier, or better yet, from the very beginning. The difference between editing with a mouse and with a tablet is analogous to trying to drive twisting mountain roads with a diesel truck vs. a Porsche. I frankly can't imagine doing my digital photo editing any other way now. In fact, I simply refuse to even tackle it with a mouse.

Within a week, you'll be comfortable with the pen in hand and with all of the time-saving short-cuts available through use of the tablet, not to mention the vastly improved quality of work that you'll produce.

Don't procrastinate. If you are serious about your digital art, then this is the only way to go.

Customer Review: Don't know how I lived without it for so long
Summary: 5 Stars

After getting the Intuos3 6x8 I had wondered how I could have possibly worked without it for so long. However, there are a few things to consider before getting one;

1. Stroke size - even though you may not have the room on your desk for a larger tablet, if you generally draw with long strokes you should consider getting the larger tablet.

2. USB connetion - you may want to think about a wireless tablet as this one has to be wired to your computer.

3. Do you have to see what you are working with? - Some people may not find this tablet (or any other) too helpful because they can not see on the tablet what they are doing, you have to refer to the screen. Wacom offers a tablet that is also a monitor. You can edit directly on screen which could prove to be invaliable. Altough this type of tablet is conserably more expensive, it could pay for itself in terms of production time and ease of use.

Other then that - this product has been a blessing. Although, next time I will fork out the money for Wacom's Cintiq.

Customer Review: Perfect for Graphic Designers
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using my Intuos3 Tablet for about 4 months and I have to say that it is a superb product! Drawing is so much simpler and the additional customizable touch sensors they have on either side of the pad are a nice feature.

This size is perfect as well (from what I hear, the 4x6 one is too small, and the 9x12 one is too big) - it's the same size as my 15" MacBook Pro and fits in my backpack nicely along with my laptop. You might also want to get a neoprene case to protect it if you will be carrying it around a lot. I hear the one that Wacom sells isn't the best quality, so I bought one on [...] for about $[...] shipped. Just choose the one that says it is for 15" laptops. For $[...], you can't go wrong.

Anyway, it took about 20 hours of playing around with the tablet to really get the hang of it, but now it has become so easy to use, its almost like second nature. I don't even use a mouse anymore - I only use the tablet.

If you're a graphic designer or into photo retouching, then I say BUY BUY BUY!

Customer Review: Exactly what I needed!
Summary: 5 Stars

I sold my old graphire tablet and bought this Intuos3 tablet. I'm so glad it was on sale; it's so useful. I don't find the size restricting at all (I bought the 6X8 model) and the pen moves so smoothly!! The pressure sensitivity is fantastic; painting feels so natural! My hand is also very happy with the nice grip on the pen :)

The only thing I can complain about is that the software that came with my tablet had an incorrect serial code. My pen also stopped working a few days after purchase, but I simply needed to update some software- Wacom customer service walked me through everything.

So, I definitely recommend this tablet for anyone serious about CG. I draw with it in my lap and feel totally at ease. Lastly, as a note, I'm able to us my tablet to full performance/speed in the latest versions of Photoshop, Painter, and in Manga Ex. This tablet also works nicely with the two latest versions of Mac OSX, but with earlier versions, there's definitely a lag in pen tracking speed (from tablet to screen).

Customer Review: Perfect size
Summary: 5 Stars

6x8 is for me the perfect size. I have been using 4x6 for the past 6 years, but after switching to dual monitor setup, it became way too small (well, also once you try a bigger tablet for few days, you just get plain claustrophobic, regardless of the display size). On the other hand, trying 9x12 was like playing tennis, my hand swinging all over the place and it wouldn't even fit on my desk (6x8's footprint is already near tabloid size). Express Keys and the control strip are really useful, once you program them to your liking. The strip could be a bit more precise, but it does the trick. I can now use Photoshop with the tablet on my lap (the cable also being extra long), without resorting to the keyboard some 80% of the time. BTW., I had a problem with Express Keys in that they would randomly reset to default functions every time I would restart Photoshop. This was fixed by simply reinstalling the driver, the same one I had before (downloaded from Wacom website).

All in all, very happy with the tablet.
