Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Wacom Intuos4 Wireless Pen Tablet

Customer Review: Simple, perfect, everything you need
Summary: 5 Stars

This tablet has been great. I've been using it all day. It works out of the box via USB, and the instructions recommend 5 hours of charge time before using it via bluetooth.

I hooked it up with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and downloaded the driver from Wacom's website. Install was simple, no reboots or anything required (as it should be). I boot a 64-bit kernel (Mac OS X by default does not actually boot the 64 bit kernel unless you're running server..) and it works fine.

I tested it with Adobe Photoshop CS 4, where it worked perfectly off the bat. All bindings were correct, whether you wanted to change your brush size, rotate canvus, zoom, erase, paint, etc.

I tested it then with Autodesk Sketch Book Express, which I don't typically use, but it came with the tablet as an optional download from Wacom's site. The basics worked fine, but I had to create a separate profile for the bindings, which was pretty trivial using their profile software.

Once it was charged, pairing via Bluetooth on the mac book pro was as easy as anything else, and there is no detectable difference in performance whether you're using USB or Bluetooth. When you pair, it will show up as a mouse, and its name will be "PTK-540WL". It's really as easy as turning on your bluetooth on Mac, turning on discovery mode, and holding down the pair button on the tablet for a few seconds. No passwords to enter, no complexity, just easy.

The device is a class 2 bluetooth device, with claimed support up to 30 feet. I tested it at 35' away, and it was still responsive. You should note, your mileage may vary. I was testing line of site to a Mac book pro. This can strongly vary based on your bluetooth adapter on your client side, and your environment. I also utilized a spectrum analyzer that has a 10khz resolution and an external antenna to see how it's RF usage is. At 1" from the device the strongest signal appeared to be about -33dBm, and at 1 foot it attenuates to about -48dBm. It uses a 0.5Mhz channel, never peaking more than 4% channel utilization during constant usage (rapid pen movements). The average pulse duration is 0.203ms, with a pulse rate of upwards of 50 pps during rapid movement, or 2pps when idle. It's usage spans the entire 2.4ghz spectrum, as bluetooth is frequency hopping, so if you were really concerned about its channel utilization (you shouldn't be), you can't avoid it running on 11b/g or 11n on 2.4ghz.

Switching from Bluetooth back to USB is painless. When you plugin the USB cable to the tablet, bluetooth automatically turns off, and then it works via USB, with about a 5 second switch over period.

The pressure sensitivity on the device seems great, though I'm not specifically the best person to really compare. I can say it feels far superior than the cheap < $40 Tablet that Monoprice sells, which supports Mac and Windows, but limited function, smaller pressure points, isn't wireless, requires a battery in the pen, and isn't nearly as responsive as this unit. If you only need to draw a few lines and some simple boxes, you could probably use that device. If you want something that feels like quality, is highly accurate, and has a world standard behind tablets standing behind it, you should get a Wacom.

One last thing that is a nice touch, being able to edit the labels that show up on the small OLED screens is great. You can easily change the label of every button and the function of every button. Having the button name there full time is awesome if you use a lot of button profiles, and saves from having to bring up the menu via software when hunting for a button.
