Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of WowWee Robotic DragonFly - Green (49 MHz)

Customer Review: Great for the price, robust but short battery life
Summary: 4 Stars

Bigger than I expected (about 15" wingspan) but is fairly robust and does fly reasonably well. Battery life is only 10 mins or so before it needs a recharge. To be expected really for a relatively small and very light device. With a little practice you can control flight quite well and steer around obstacles. My kids have had tons of fun with it. I'm amazed it hasn't broken any of the delicate flight mechanism so far with all the crashing, it is more robust than I expected. Watch those precious ornaments!

Customer Review: I Want One Also
Summary: 4 Stars

The 15 year old I bought this for wouldn't take it outside to play with it, wouldn't read the instructions and generally annoyed his father with it. But that's fifteen for you.

When I got a chance at it I found it easy to fly and maneuver, even in the house. The charge lasts about 7 minutes which doesn't seem like a lot but prevents the toy from becoming boring. I would recommend this for any age except 15.

Customer Review: Very fun toy, but has some conditions to use it
Summary: 4 Stars

I like a lot this Dragonfly, it's fun to use. The only points to consider are: 1- You cannot fly it at home, unless you have a very very big space inside. 2- When you fly it inside, make sure there is no wind (although it can be fun trying to fly it against the wind direction). Anyway, good toy!

Customer Review: Great Gift
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this for my brother for Christmas and he really enjoyed it. It's still working despite him constantly crashing it. I think the only drawback is the time it takes to recharge the flyer. Other than that, it's an excellent toy.

Customer Review: Flight test and use of Wow Wee Dragonfly
Summary: 3 Stars

Exhibits a galloping motion aerodynamics people call a Phugoid oscillation. This can be damped out by adding horizontal tail area (I used 1mm Depron foam sheet from A2Z's online hobby store - very similar to the toy's material - and continued the rear shape as far out and back as the box and cradle would allow) test with paper templates first. A glue stick will adhere the add-on well enough and it could be removed with isopropyl or denatured alcohol. This was a big flight improvement but not enough. It needs nose weight to move the center of gravity forward compared to the center of lift. Sorry to bore you, but some of you want to understand the problem. BBs (steel .177") were taped on for trials, then installed in a small hole cut into the top, forward of the eyes but not close to the nose so it still has the structure to take a head-on crash. Don't make it too deep, about 1/4" square and deep, because you can go through to the hollow cavity and the BBs will fall in, add weight without helping the balance and may not be recoverable. If you do cut through, glue in paper sides and bottom to your hole. Try 3 to 5 BBs or an equivilent in buckshot, clay or anything else small and heavy. The goal is for the dragonfly to lift at half or two-thirds throttle. You have to try out various weights to find your best compromise. It won't lift if you have too much nose weight; it will fly down under power. The final flight is still not great for an aircraft but looks somewhat like an insect might. When satisfied, glue the weight in with epoxy of something that won't eat foam, and carve a piece of packaging foam too fill the hole.
