As this is the first caller ID phone we have used, we cannot compare some features, but it sure seems to work ok for us. Contrary to what some reviews said, it does hang on the wall just fine. You do, of course, have to catch on to the trick of changing the hang up button around to accomodate the wall position. The voice quality is a bit raspy, not as clear as our previous separated voice machine, but the buttons seem to work ok and it isn't very hard to figure it out. I put it together and hung it on the wall myself and I have no prior experience. We find the phone to be adequate, nothing tremendous about it, but nothing really bad either for an inexpensive compact phone system.Customer Review: Very Pleased With This Phone So Far

The AT&T 1856 phone has provided everything I expected from it. The sound is clear without cutting out as it did when I used a wireless phone. I can see the caller ID display a lot easier than with the wireless. There is the health benefit that the earpiece doesn't get hot next to my ear or emit harmful radiation. It reminds me of the way phones used to be way back when Ma Bell ran the best phone service in the world. You know when phone service was a monopoly. I added a longer cord so I can still sit in my living room and use the phone that is hanging on a wall in the kitchen. I just got it so I can't comment on how long it will last.Customer Review: Pretty decent phone

I bought this phone to replace my cordless phones. I had to hard of a time hearing on my cordless phones (and I am not hard of hearing). This phone has great volume and volume control. It is durable and can be mounted on your wall or put on your counter. I did have to buy a longer phone cord so I could walk around. The speaker phone has really good volume and the people I have spoken with on speaker phone can hear me really well. The only draw back is that the caller ID does not light up so it is hard to see at night. Overall I am very happy with this purchase and pleasantly surprised by its quality.Customer Review: Cheap and satisfactory

You definitely need to replace the given chord with a longer one. Installation isn't that bad. The only real complaint I have deals with caller ID. When we pick up the phone it displays the phone number that was last dialed, not the incoming phone number. Plus, I cannot find call history of incoming and outgoing phone numbers.
It is not the easiest screen display to understand, but if you just want to place calls, receive calls, and listen to voice messages then this phone is fine. It has reliably good sounds quality and has a good design (although the screen is confusing).

As I cannot use a wireless phone (I get dizzy from the radiation) I bought this phone for my bedroom. It has all the features I could ask for save two - an illuminated display and date and time display. My ancient Radio Shack phone has them - why not this one? You can get the date and time by pressing a button and it is announced - a good night time feature. I would like it on the display, too. Messages are clear and it's obvious when you have received one. The caller ID and answering functions do seem to have been created by separate departments and grafted together but they work.
