Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of AT&T 1856 Corded Speakerphone with Digital Answering System (White)

Customer Review: Memory Guard
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great little phone, and for the price -- well, it's unbeatable, and trust me, I compared a LOT of models.

But (there's always a but, isn't there?) the bad news is that although this phone has "Memory Guard," it's NOT the same as a battery backup. Even tho' the Amazon Product Description says "Power Failure Operation Memory Loss Protection (battery required)" there's no place to put batteries. You can get and make calls when the power is out, but the phone will not ring, so you need another corded phone that will ring to let you know you've got a call. The answering machine will not work during a power outage, and the clock needs to be reset (easy to do) if the power goes out for even a second. But the good news is you will NOT lose messages that came in before the power went out (or after it comes back on, although the time stamp for those calls will not be right unless the power went out for only a few seconds). You also will not lose stored numbers, your recorded announcement, and other settings.

The good news is it's got a lot of features not found on other phones in this price range, notably (for me, anyway) a mute button with indicator that you're in mute mode, volume control for the speakerphone, ability to dial out while in speakerphone mode (no need to take the handset off the hook), and an audible message alert.

I found this easy to set up, but maybe only because I had a cordless AT&T phone that worked much the same way, so I'm used to the procedures for setting it up.

Customer Review: Good Ansewring System/Phone
Summary: 4 Stars

The number of basic telephone answering machines and answering machines with corded telephones has shrunk to just a few in the past two years. Seems like everybody needs a machine with two or even three cordless handsets. Well, if you are like me- you use your cell phone much of the time and use your home phone to screen out unwanted calls from work, annoying relatives and anybody else you wouldn't give your cell number to- a basic corded phone with answering machine is all you need. Cordless phones are a pain in the wallet if you don't use them much- the batteries go bad very quickly, so a corded phone is my only choice.

The AT&T 1856 is easy to set up, has caller ID (if you subscribe to that service -I don't) and is easy to use. The phone has good sound quality and you don't need a battery back-up to save messages- though all your settings are erased after a power outage. The speaker phone works well enough too.
My biggest gripe- the really short handset cord- you can't be more than two feet from the phone!- so order a 12 or 20 footer along with the phone!

Customer Review: a good basic phone and answering system
Summary: 4 Stars

If your needs are simple, this unit is a good solution. The sound quality is good, the handset is fairly comfortable, and the answering system works well. It is fairly easy to set up, though a lot of space in the manual is dedicated to the caller ID/call waiting system that only works if you have subscribed to such a service. The unit is compact, saving desk space, and using it is intuitive. The only complaints I have are minor. You can only record an outgoing message via the small microphone in the front (and not the handset), which has so-so sound quality. Similarly, you can't listen to messages through the handset, which is a problem if privacy is a concern. Finally, you can only delete messages while they are playing, so you need to replay them sometimes to do so. Overall, I am satisfied with this unit, especially at the price.

Customer Review: Better than expected
Summary: 4 Stars

After my phone died yesterday morning (best phone ever held up for 15 years). I ran to amazon looking for a phone I needed a answering machine, and for it to be corded and have a CID and a speaker phone I really wanted it to talk too but I would hold my breath plus I wanted it to be under $30. I know fat chance huh. Well I got lucky I found the AT&T 1856 Corded Speakerphone with Digital Answering System. It has everything I wanted and is at a great price. I ordered it one day mail thanks Prime :) Got it today set it up and it TALKS OMG the only thing I hate is the display is not lit so if using in the dark you will need a light but it talks so you will know who is calling, and it dont have a lot of time for messages 19 min so tell your long winded friends to keep it short. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Customer Review: Complicated phone without backlight
Summary: 4 Stars

The phone is definitely value for money. It has lots of features but they are complicated to understand and to remember. The phone needs to be connected to a power socket. Although, it works in power outage. It is a hardy phone and with a option of mounting on the wall.

Pros:
1. Value for money.
2. Complicated speaker phone with lots of feature.
3. Hardy.
4. Speaker and sound quality is great.

Cons:

1. There is no back-light so it is hard visualize anything at the display.
2. The cord which comes from the wall socket to the phone is short.
3. Too complicated to program and work with.
4. Ring-tone is irritating.

Overall, I will give it a 4 star for the price and use.
