Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Vixen 3226 A80Mf Telescope and Porta Mount (#2603, #3992)Customer Review: Great Beginner to Intermediate Scope on a Beauty of a Mount Summary: 5 Stars
I have had the Vixen A80Mf and PortaMount for several years.
I have optically better and bigger (and of course more expensive)
scopes, but this is the scope I use the most often. The old
cliche' is true: The best telescope is the one you actually use.
The scope and mount are light enough for this old man (68 y.o.)
to carry it out to the yard without difficulty. Light weight,
in this case, does not mean flimsy. The telescope is sturdy.
Optical quality is very good. It has a smooth focus. When mounted
on the PortaMount with its smooth slow motion manual controls,
the image is beautifully steady. Tap the tube and the image
settles quickly. The supplied red dot finder is very easy to use
and accurate when properly aligned (a simple matter). The eyepieces
provided are of good quality.
The typical price tag of $500 for mount and scope may seem large,
but this is a scope you can use for a lifetime without exhausting
its possibilities. No, you won't have the object detail, clarity,
and color of the magazine astrophotos when you find those "faint
fuzzies" in deep space, nor anything like the view through the
huge reflector you might find at a star party. What you will have
is a scope that can show you a fair bit detail in a lot of the
bigger and brighter deep space objects, let you view the stellar
members of a large number of double and multiple star systems, get
satisfying views of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, and some of the
satellites of the latter two, and spectacular high magnification
views of the surface of the moon when sky conditions are good.
This is a real telescope, not a department store toy.
Description of Vixen 3226 A80Mf Telescope and Porta Mount (#2603, #3992)If you are looking to start out with something a little larger than a beginner scope and want to spend the time to learn the sky instead of relying on a computer to slew the scope over to each object, this is the package for you The A80Mf attached to the Porta Mount moves easily and is stable when stopped. No tweaking of the hand controls is necessary.
