Customer Review: Great product for the price!

I borrowed this from a friend to see how well it worked and if it would be a wise expenditure of $60. My main use would be to examine phonograph needles for wear.
The first thing I noticed is that the microscope is a little heavy for the stand, and the base of the stand was not designed to compensate for the microscope's weight and balance. Though it does hold the 'scope well enough to use it for most applications, it's not hard to tip it over since the base of the stand is not weighted - but since you get the best image by placing the scope directly on the object, this wasn't much of an issue. Also, keep in mind that at 400X magnification, the object must be parallel to the lens to achieve uniform focus. Thus, you will need to have the object tilted to use the stand in some cases.
The end of the scope has a clear plastic spacer, enabling one to let the scope rest directly on the object and not tip over - so you don't really need the stand. After following the manual's instructions, I was able to get a nice clear picture of the tip of a phonograph needle that occupied about half the screen, as well as some VERY nice closeups of record grooves. Since records are black and absorb light, the built-in LED illuminator comes in very handy. Rotating the scope allowed me to optimize the shadows created by the LED arrangement which was necessary for record grooves, but would not be an issue with most anything else.
The lighting adjustment control is a bit erratic, suggesting that the control sat in stock for awhile before being installed. They get dirt inside them which can be cleaned away by simply turning the adjustment back and forth several times. Since this is a brand new unit, I found that a bit disapponting, but nothing I can't live with.
I chose to edit and enhance the images using my own software (Paint Shop Pro or the cheap version of Photoshop), and got quite acceptable and surprising results. The images can be seen on my website:

On the whole, this is a great deal for $60. If you're a lab technician who already has an $800 optical microscope, you shouldn't even be looking at a $60 item to compare it to. This is not intended to be a fully self-contained million-dollar Forensic Science Laboratory! However, it IS a fully self-contained apparatus for quickly taking photomicrographs without needing a separate lighting source. Anyone with a little computer savvy and a photo editing program can get excellent results. For general applications, the Veho is quite a deal and well worth the investment. Granted, you'll need to be a little creative on how to hold and angle the object for best results, but these are minor things that don't take much time to figure out. I will definitely buy one.
