Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Vantec NexStar CX NST-200S2-BK 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (Black)Customer Review: 3 of 'em in use for 5 to 18 months w/o a hitch Summary: 5 Stars
The Vantec NexStar CX is a great, inexpensive little enclosure. But what really sold me on these enclosures is that I've used 3 of these enclosures for the last 5 to 18 months without any problems:
1) Two house WD3200BEVT 320GB, 5400 rpm drives that are used for backing-up a late '07 white MacBook/OSX 10.5.8 and a Ubuntu'ed Compaq Presario F500/GF96UA. They've been in use for six months- maybe 20 backups and 10 clones with (a guess) 10 TB transfered. Before that, one enclosure was used lightly for about a year or with a 80 GB, 5400 rpm Seagate ST980811 drive.
2) One houses a Hitachi HTS542512K9SA00, 120 GB, 5400 rpm drive and is connected to Airport Extreme router that's been up 24/7 for the last 5 months. it's used for file sharing and media streaming- maybe a total of 10-20 TB transferred (a WAG).
None of the above require the use of the second plug on the Y connector. And none have gotten what I'd call too warm- even when doing a full clone of my MacBook's 320 GB drive using SuperDuper. BTW, a Mac can boot and run off of a cloned *external* drive.
Beware that the max drive size is 500 GB. With the price of 640 GB drives, that's not currently an issue with me.
The enclosure has a groove around most of its perimeter. That makes it easy to cobble together a stand for holding the enclosures vertically rather than just laying them down flat. The drives will run cooler and be less subject to being covered by papers, etc. Basically cut some 10d nails to suitable length and insert into holes drilled in a chunk of 3/4" plywood. The holes are spaced so that the grooves in the ends of the enclosure slide down on the hack nails. One of my stands holds two drives.
I not had any of the problems others have reported having with the screws. Maybe Vantec had a bad batch and I lucked out? If anything the screws in all of mine seemed a bit on the tight side going in initially. Anyway, some tips:
1) Before inserting the screws initially, rub them lightly on a bar of paraffin or Ivory soap to lubricate the threads. Tighten them using a #1 Philips screwdriver and a bit of common sense. Ditto on the tip another reviewer to alternately and gradually tighten down the screws to reduce the chance of stripping the holes.
2) When reinserting a screw, turn it slowly *counter-clockwise* with light pressure until you feel it click over the end of the threads in the housing hole, then turn it clockwise. This will really help prevent cross-threading- especially for those with enclosures with holes that are too large.
