Customer Review: Good bang for the buck Summary: 4 Stars
If you are looking for a portable television, you really can't beat the price on this unit. Is it perfect? Not really...but it does what it's supposed to do and does it well.
First and foremost, and perhaps the reason to pick this unit over other similar units, is it has a slot of SD cards and thumb drives. I had an Archo 605 I used for video and when it crashed I started looking for a replacement. I got an Archos 7 Home Tablet but it went back to Amazon because of a multitude of problems. I decided I wanted something without a hard drive since that's generally what fails first. I have since found a better option than this for playing videos, but it doesn't offer over-the-air television reception. The other day both tvs were occupied so I needed this to watch a football game and it was perfect.
I looked and looked at portable TVs and no other unit (that I found) offered playback from an external media source. I loaded up a few AVI files on an SDHC card and they played just fine. I also played from a micro SD card and adapter. I haven't experimented with other file formats yet. The drawback to this is that while watching shows from an external media source, you cannot pause, fast forward or rewind. You can also look at photos simply buy pulling your sd card out and plugging it in for a nice slideshow. Great for keeping the kids occupied...
The antenna that comes with the unit is not all that great. I first tried it in our living room, where we have had a little trouble getting good reception on our television. The unit only picked up two channels. In our bedroom it got a few more. I plugged some RCA rabbit ears in and it got all the digital broadcast channels in my area. I never tested it with an alternate source like cable or satellite. I got the unit after we disconnected tv for a good personal use option.
Picture quality is probably 7 or 8 out of 10. Sound quality is about a 5, but better than I anticipated. With good headphones it improves to an 8 or 9.
Battery life is said to be about 90 minutes. I used it mainly while it was plugged in so I can't comment on this. 90 minutes is definitely a con since it limits the unit's portability.
Overall I'm very happy with the unit. I wouldn't pay the Amazon asking price, but I shopped around and was able to find a new unit for about fifty bucks. I'll buy an adapter to use in the automobile. The unit does offer a/v input, so I'm also going to experiment with some cabling. I have a travel DVD kit with two screens and I'm hoping that I might be able to add this as a third. I don't have high hopes but it will be fun to try...
