I found I can use cheap single layer disks but not cheap dual layer. I tried cheap dual layer disks and got a lot of coasters.
After researching the subject, I found many recommendations for this brand so I tried them. (These are the ones made in Singapore, which is what was recommended. I haven't run across any Verbatim DLs that aren't made there.)
They always produce a good result and Amazon has the best price. (I found them in a brick-and-mortar store, but they were a pack of 15 for about the same price compared to the 20-pack I get here.)

I have tried about every disc (DVD+R,DL) available and every batch had bad discs, with some over half failed. With Verbatim every single disc worked perfectly. I had already found this to be true with regular, single layer discs. Out of approx 400 Verbatim discs, NOT ONE failed! The only problem is finding them. I used to find them in stores but now it's pretty much online only. Strangely I found them recently at the most unlikely place: Big Lots! I bought them out, about 400 discs and every one burned perfectly. Now it looks like it's online, but I'm more than willing to wait a few days for the only DVD disc worth buying.Customer Review: Verbatim only here

I have used almost every brand of disk out there and for the money I believe Verbatim is the best. It is the only brand I use for DVD+R disk and so when I wanted a Dual layer disk the answer was obvious. They use better dyes than the cheaper or big name brands and that means quality in the results. In using blank CD disk, it is not as important but with DVDs it is. I have used other brand DVDs and have had good results too but every so often a bad batch will come around. With Verbatim, I have always had great results, I always buy verbatim. Ordering from Amazon saves about 40% over retail as well with the dual layer.Customer Review: Verbatim synonymous for quality

When through 50 Memorex DVD+R DLs and only had a successful burn approximately 20% of the time. With Verbatim I have yet to have a bad burn. Any difference in cost is offset by the value of your time. Can't remember why exaclty I even bought Memorex but will never again buy any other brand until they can prove their reliability. One thing to keep in mind is that the data integrity of your discs will degrade over time, even if you keep them in an ideal environment and in perfect condition. I would assume that Verbatims may last a little longer. So I you have precious data, you don't want to go with anything less.Customer Review: DL you can trust

I bought a 20 dl pack from amazon last month. I have been burning dvd data of all kind and no one have been damaged.
I have tried with other brands before on my DELL Laptop 6400 and I can say that the 65% of the cases they failed (even at the minimum speed without any program loaded - including antivirus).
Next Time, I will buy 50 for backups my photos and all other stuff because I trust on media saved on internet and portable media. External hard disk are usefull but not trusted 100% for some facts that I will not mention here.
