Customer Review: They work so far - UPDATED REVIEW on Jan. 23, 2011
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered the Verbatim 95098 DVD+R 100 pack, after reading a review that said these ones were not made in India. Well, quess what? The are made in India. I've only used two so far, so this review may be a bit premature, but both burned fine. For what it's worth, I have a Samsung SH-S222L burner (pretty sure that's the model), and I use K3B to burn disks (a Linux app). The first disk I burned was about 2.5GB worth of data, and using the default settings, K3B started burning at the initial speed of 22.5x. I'm not sure how that's possible, but that's what it said. The actual esimated burn speed varied between 10x and 16x, and the data on the disk was readable. The second disk I burned was a video DVD (a home video), and I chose 8x for the burn speed. That worked fine, plays in my DVD player without any problems. I'm no expert, but my guess is that different disks work differently in different burners. To be honest, I've never had any bad disks, no matter what brand disk or burner I've ever used, except when a burner was dying. It always seems to be the burner at fault. I had an HP burner (I forget the model) that burned coasters after the first week, all others worked fine for at least a few years. If I start getting bad disks with this batch, I'll update this review.

Update: I just noticed today that sometimes video DVDs I burn have non-functioning DVD menu buttons. Pressing the menu button on the remote one or more times fixes it. I burned them at 8x, by the way. Will have to try a slower speed, perhaps, but likely will look for another brand. I'm not sure if it's just my DVD player or the disks, though. I guess I should suspect the disks. Too bad I couldn't find out where they were manufactured before ordering them. I'll have to avoid Verbatim after this. Other than that weird problem, I haven't had any other problems - yet. Time will tell. I'll stick with Sony, when on sale locally. I've never had problems with those.

Update: The two DVDs with bad menu buttons were caused by an older version of DvdStyler, I had forgotten about that. I had to re-do the menus with the newest version, now they are fine. It wasn't the disks after all. So, it seems that these disks are working fine for me. I'll wait until I've burned more of them, and report back if there are any problems. Still, with all the complaints, I'll stick with other brands after this. I've had great results with Sony, and some others.

Update April 2, 2011: I've used about two thirds of the discs, and not one failure! Either I'm one of the lucky ones, or they improved the quality of these disks.

Verbatim blank media are #1. 640 5-egg reviews on Newegg and nearly 100 4-star reviews on Amazon should leave very little doubt. For many years, I chose to stick with DVD-R's to get the best compatibility, especially for DVD video. But recently, I decided to try DVD+R's and changing the Book Type to DVD-ROM by bitsetting and it works great!

Whether you need/prefer +R's or -R's, Verbatim are most often considered to be the best. Even if Taiyo Yuden are better, they are far more expensive and harder to find. Still, I have to admit I have also used Memorex and Ridata media without any problems. In the end, finding blanks that burn well with your particular DVD burner is probably the only real important factor. I have used the Verbatim with 2 NEC and a Samsung burner without any problems. For those who are interested, these Verbatim's are MCC-004's.

Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:MCC-004-000]

Finally, there are some self-professed disc geeks out there who are complaining that a majority of Verbatim discs are now being produced in the UAE, at the Falcon Tech factory. The going quality rule of thumb is Taiwain=Excellent, India=Good, UAE= Poor. My personal experience and research has indicated however, that this is just nonsense. A "batch" does not comprise of one or two spindles and a vast majority of users have had very few problems burning and/or reading these discs. All the talk about PI errors and PI failures are mostly random mumbo jumbo and is hard to quantify into actual real world results. A big problem is that results from scans can vary widely depending on the drive being used. How is THAT scientific? My rule of thumb? If it burns ok and it plays ok, then I'm ok. What will probably have a greater impact in quality is burning at slightly slower speeds than the disc rating. I burn 16x media at 12x mainly and if I'm really concerned, go down to even 8x. Pressed DVD's can reveal poor PIE/PIF test results so to me, those tests are unreliable and not to be depended on by themselves. If it passes a read test, I say you're good to go and these UAE Verbatim DVD+R's indeed pass.

Customer Review: They work....
Summary: 5 Stars

Another non-sexy product to review......

They are shiny discs of silica.
They come on a spindle.
They smell kind of funny.
They hold a bunch of data.
They are stacked 100 high - I counted. Actually I didn't count them - that was a lie.
They smell kind of funny.

Pretty good value - PRIME gets them here in a hurry sans tax. Sorry Texas...

May 2008 Edit:

OK maybe I have a slight vanity issue here at Amazon... in looking at this product and the reviews (at this edit there are 45 of 'em) how do you really make these types of reviews more appealing... I mean only 2 outta 5 found my review helpful. Jeeeeez - gimme a break!

OK maybe if my review sounded more like.....:

These are the world's bestest DVD+R discs ever! No coasters!

I have illegally duped over 23,000 movies on these discs with NO coasters nor any interest shown by the FBI!

These DVD+R's along with a balanced diet helped me lose 25 pounds in only 10 days!!! And NO COASTERS!!

Just the other day I was driving home from work when I noticed a nursing home was on fire. Acting quickly I took a whole spindle of the DVD+R's, strung them together with some mint flavored dental floss and fashioned a make-shift net. With the aid of a passing Boy Scout we stretched the DVD+R net across the front of the building and had all of the retirees jump to safety. Even after all that I used the DVD+R's from the rescue net to burn music, data and recipe's with NO COASTERS!

Better????

Oh - and the above is complete bovine. I really didn't have the help of a Boy Scout to save all of the people from the retirement home.

Customer Review: No coasters; what else do you want?
Summary: 5 Stars

In my eyes, burnable DVD media has joined burnable CD media in the group of "not expensive enough to fret about." In the early days, I spent a fair amount of time perusing batch codes and originating factory lists trying to find DVD media that would ensure the lowest failure rate. This was because if you got a failure, it could be a $5 coaster. Now that DVDs have joined the <50¢ club, it's not as big of a deal.

In my experience, the quality of modern DVD media has become much more homogeneous than it used to be (at least among the classically trusted brands) while prices have plummeted. Varbatim was suggested to me a few years ago by a friend, and since then, I have put a few hundred single- and dual-layer Verbatim DVDs through various burners (Lite-On, Plextor, and whatever is in my ThinkPad) and have been pleased with their quality. I thought I found a bad batch once, but it ended up being a failing hard drive.

This is the second time I've ordered this specific 100-disc spindle (other one wasn't from Amazon) and the first one performed well. Would definitely recommend them.

Customer Review: CAREFUL ABOUT AMAZON PACKAGING!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've purchased things from Amazon before but I read some reviews about packaging and Amazon's practice of sticking air pillows on the sides instead of using peanuts underneath (the old fashioned way). As a result, many Amazon customers have reported getting spindles with a few cracked discs on top due to corner impacts during shipping! AMAZON SHOULD NOT SKIMP ON THE QUALITY OF PACKAGING IF IT WANTS TO KEEP CUSTOMERS! Some items are just too delicate to use a air pillow on the side.

I wound up buying them from Newegg instead who has a very high, well respected reputation, free shipping, and was selling the spindle for the exact same price. You just have to pay a little tax. The extra tax was worth it knowing the ITEM IS PACKAGED BETTER. A shipping box filled with a generous amount of peanuts, and the spindle buried inside. That means Newegg cares more too as far as I'm concerned. You can collect the extra peanuts in a big trash bag to use when you ship your own packages.

By the way, my Panasonic DVD recorder and LG Burner read and burn the Verbatims perfectly.
