Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of V-MODA Vibe In-Ear Noise-Isolating Metal Headphone (Red Roxx)Customer Review: best bet for convenience and quality for small eared people Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned the Red Roxx for a few weeks now. I had the Sennheiser PX100 which, like all over the hear headphones, very quickly started to hurt because of the pressure on my ears. I had the Koss over-the-ear clips phones, which are pretty good but has a pretty loose fit and thus you had to turn the volume up to compensate. I also used the came-with-the ipod earbud, but not so great.
I wanted "good" phones but also ones that can be quickly be inserted and removed and hung around my neck. I walk around with my ipod and when people speak to me I need to be able to unplug my ears. I also needed something I could wear at the gym and use at home with the laptop. In-the-ear phones fulfilled these requirements the best.
I have small ear canals and finding a good fit is an issue. I tried the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 Studio Earphones, but I couldn't get the large "hearing aid" sized buds to stay in my ear at all and due to all of my fiddling with them, the wires broke (i.e. I lost sound in one ear) within 12 hours. I also didn't want to buy the Shures and have to use the pick to regularly clean them out!
Due to my small ears, using the smallest rubber flanges with works pretty well. Still not a perfect fit, but I don't think I will find one unless I have something custom made for mucho bucks. Jamming them in my ears can make my ears somewhat sore but I am still figuring out how to best wear them and I sometimes can finesse a looser and more comfortable fit. Right now I do need to adjust them/reinsert them a fair amount. For example, if you clench your jaw, they will pop out!
They are good sound insulators, but don't completely block out sound which I like so I can hear someone trying to get my attention.
Re: the actual sound. They sound pretty good to me, but since my ears aren't stellar (I didn't listen to my mother and played my Walkman too loud as a teen). I can now pick up details in music that I could not with other phones.
They now come in a very handy black case. I find that taking the 30 seconds to wrap them around the insert is a better use of my time than untangling the wires.
Hint # 1: They come with both black and clear rubber inserts and I put one of each on so I can easily identify the left and the right phone.
Hint #2: Other reviewers noted that the plug is smooth metal and gets slippery when you unplug it from a jack with sweaty hands which leads to frayed wires. I have wrapped Velcro tape (the softer half of the Velcro, not the hooks) around the plug and that provides a good grip.
These are nice and light and good quality. Since I don't think I will find the absolutely perfect phones for my ears and my needs without going custom, I think these fit the bill the best for me. I recommend.
