Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of URC RFS200 PowerPak Bundle w/ MasterControl RF20 and PowerBlasterCustomer Review: Flexible macros, RF and price make this a bargain. Summary: 5 Stars
Let me first say that I'm in no way assoicated with this company and I rarly take the time to write reviews like this, but when I'm so impressed with a product and it's support, I feel it's necessary to shout out my comments to the world.
Having tried several so called universal remotes in combination with jury-rigged IR retransmitters, amplifiers, plasma-proof receivers, etc. I found a very affordable solution with this Universal Remote RFS200 PowerPak Bundle. The RFS200 combines the powerful RF20 learning + preprogrammed + macro capable remote, with the company's PowerBlaster.
When the RF20 remote sends an infrared (IR) command to a component such as a TV, cable box or VCR, it also sends a radio frequency (RF) signal to the PowerBlaster. The PowerBlaster then converts this RF signal back into IR and sends it out the six included IR 'flashers'. The flashers tiny IR transmitters on a thin wire (about 10') that are stuck onto the front of your system's components. Therefore, it no longer matters if the components are hidden behind cabinet doors. The wife loves it, because she would always have to point our previous remotes at some of the less sensitive components to get them to respond. Her patience with my complicated techno setup was nearly at it's end prior to RFS200.
The macro capabilities of the RF20 are unrivaled in this price range. I have several complicated macros that took some time and a couple of support calls. Universal Remote's support team are very available and I've always gotten through in only 2 or 3 minutes. The quality and patience of the support team are excellent and they have understood and guided me along the sometimes rocky macro path. BTW, if the batteries die, you won't loose anything. All macros and learned commands are saved in non-volatile memory. Thank goodness for small favors.
As a true geek, I'm always leary of technologies, the RF ones in particular. I've seen lots of interference problems and little that can be done to solve them. Beging an RF device, the RFS200 was no exception. When I first connected the PowerBlaster, the receive light came on pretty much steadily; not a good sign, since I wasn't pressing any buttons on the remote.
After a good deal of trouble shooting, I discovered that the VGA video cable running from my home automation PC (also located in the same stereo rack) to the VGA input of my plasma TV was sending out some nasty signals. Once unplugged from the PC the PowerBlaster light went out, although I did need to move the PowerBlaster around and away from the PC a few feet to really solve the problem. I still need the PC to TV connection, so I'll try a better quality shielded cable in the near future.
Pros: Excellent price & value. VERY strong IR signals. Learning works well. Macros can do most anything if you're willing to take the time. With RF, you can hide up to six components in your cabinets.
Con: Stray RF was a problem and may not be easily solved. IMHO, the company should consider a different frequency band in future products.
