Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Uniden BC72XLT Handheld Scanner (Black)Customer Review: Easy to use basic scanner! Summary: 5 Stars
I just received this today and within 10 minutes I had programmed my favorite frequencies and was listening to the tower at Washington National airport! I was nervous about the ease of use after reading some of the reviews but honestly, if you read the instructions it is very easy to program. Sure you need push 3 buttons, but surely that shouldn't be a problem. The biggest surprise for me was that I actually received the comms from National airport's tower loud and clear (both the tower and airplane communications) and I'm 25.28 miles away according to Mapquest. I plan on buying a better $20 antenna and I can only imagine how much better this thing will be.
I am having some problem figuring out how to tune into a specific frequency without programming into one of the banks but I'm sure it's some stupid thing that I'm overlooking. I dropped off one star because of this and because you do need to push a few more buttons when 1 or 2 would suffice but this is not a problem at all if you read the booklet it comes with. Great scanner for a first time user!
Customer Review: a neat little scanner Summary: 5 Stars
I'm very happy with this scanner. Performs surprisingly well for its size. Setting it up was quite intuitive and it was up and scanning within 10 minutes of taking it out of the box. The reception is good and I can even pick up air band though I'm not close to the airport. I just got it yesterday so I'll post a more detailed review after using it a bit but for first impressions, I'm really impressed!
<Update>
I've been using it for more than a month now and am not at all disappointed. The reception is good for weather and air band. It picks up both air to ground and ground to air transmissions. The power consumption is a little on the higher side, a standard 1800 mAh NiMH pair lasts for a couple of days with a few hours of usage per day. But it has a built in NiMH charger which is a nice feature. I usually plug it in overnight and the battery is good to go in the morning.
Customer Review: "Rock Solid" In Oregon Summary: 5 Stars
I researched scanners for a week. And I live in Grants Pass,Oregon , About 50,ooo people, so I guessed right,no trunking devices. The Bearcat72xlt was a perfect choice. I downloaded the manual so it would be letter size. punched holes in it and put it in a binder. It was 63 pages long and gave perfect instructions what to do.I also downloaded the frequencys with no problem for my county. I live in Mountains and hilly country and programing was 10 times easyer than my mp3 player. I only installed 10 Frquencys in a 100 channel scanner. All are very clear!! My first scanner was in 1977 and was a crystal 8 channel scanner.This is my second and get ni-mh batterys. Do not pick this one for Nascar, It is the 4th from the top rated by Uniden..... Perfect choice For my needs!!!It has way more feauters than I need. I highly recomend this scanner!!!!!!
Customer Review: Very fun Summary: 5 Stars
I received this as a Christmas gift; I have been using it everyday since I got it. It's a very useful tool to own, and to have during an emergency. (power outage, storms.) It's pretty straight-forward to program. I like the fact that you can do a "blind scan" just scan all the freq. that are programed into the radio, and be able to pickup the ones being used in your city. If you want to get specific codes for your city, you can always find them on the internet. It's very handy to know your local NOAA freq. in your city since it broadcasts since NOAA's channels all broadcast all hazards ( severe weather, amber alerts etc.) and weather 24/7. It's also alot of fun to be able to hear your local first responders. Just alot of fun to own. The only thing I don't like about it is that it eats AA batteries.
Customer Review: BC72XLT Scanner Review Summary: 5 Stars
I've had Bearcat scanners in the past that have far outlived what most people would consider a useful life...so another Bearcat scanner made sense. I only needed one with a few channels to scan so the BC72XLT fit the bill perfectly.
PROs: excellent audio quality, sensitive reception using the stock flexible antenna, not susceptible to external interference, uses AC/regular/NiCad batteries (only the AC adapter is included), large easy-to-read display, bright orange backlight, lightweight.
CONs: there is a short learning curve to the programing but once you figure it out, it's pretty easy, although not exactly intuitive; multi-function buttons take a little getting used to.
Would I buy this scanner again? Definitely! It's a great value.
