Which is, don't use the keypad to program, buy the software! Once you get past that and setup your individual systems and play with the different features, it's great. I like being able to just touch one button and turn off a system I don't want to hear or vice versa. I like the backlight on squelch feature and reception with the provided rubber duck is pretty good. I upgraded the antenna, but only noticed a small improvement. Wish the speaker was a bit louder, but that is the only negative thing I can think of.Customer Review: Great performance but .....

Great performance but programming learning curve is a little long for novices like me, due to product manual complexity. I bought the ARC 246 software which has its own learning curve but is quite helpful in the long run. The stock antenna is good but the Austin Condor all-baud portable antenna from ScannerMaster is even better. In the final analysis, the 246T is certainly worth the investment of time to learn and the fair price from Amazon.Customer Review: UNIDEN BC- 246T

I am sure that this is a great scanner, but the manual is difficult to use and the results that I have gotten so far is by trial and error. I purchased the software immediately so that I could program it from my computer but the cable that was provided does not match up with the computer. I ordered the USB cable a month ago and still have not received it. So the software is useless to me at this time.

Since this is my first scanner i really don't have a frame of reference. However I am satisifed with the product. Still learning all the features and it's not nearly as bad as other people make it out to be. Make yourself a favor and purchase the arc246 it will save you a lot of pain.
Wish it would come with the software, cable and a case. That's the only reason it gets 4 stars.

This is a nice scanner but being a novice it's way to sofisticated for me. I just wanted to listen to the local emergency services ....not Amarillo or Orange County. I should of settled for a cheapie model but that's not my nature. It's too complicated for me but that's my problem not uniden's. I'm sure it's a great product as soon as I figure out the best way to set it up.
