Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of URC MX-980 255 Device IR/RF Remote with Color LCDCustomer Review: Professionally programmed, its a great remote Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fantastic remote. Great ergonomics, colorful screen, nice charging cradle. BUT FIRST & FOREMOST THIS IS NOT A REMOTE FOR THE DIY'ER. Don't order it unless you have a professional installer to program it for you. If you do otherwise, don't come on here and bash the remote or manufacturer. See-it says in the description "it enables professional installers to....sophisticated....for installers to program as it is for users to operate." I've been a custom A/V designer & installer since before surround sound, and these are the finest remotes short of going to a full-on crestron or AMX type system.
I've heard how much better a Harmony is, etc. Everybody loves the harmony HELP button, but for example, one of the biggest problems when you want to watch TV is somehow the cable box gets out of sync (the tv is on but the box is off). With the Harmony it asks you a question then based on your answer sends out a command then asks you another question. I counted 9 button pushes to answer if the TV was on (yes-no) did that solve the problem (yes-no) etc. before I got the box on & the remote back to where I could control the system. A professional installer will program a "watch TV" button for all the steps to turn on your system, but if a power outage or someone turning the cable box off with its own remote gets the box out of sync with your gear, they will program the ON button, on a remote like the 980 to power the cable box on, then re-issue the discrete commands of the TV and audio system just in case, so that 1 button push gets you going. On the Harmony, one button push only got you into the help mode.
How about sleep timer? TV has one, but it goes off and you still have sound. Audio system has one but it goes off & you still have picture. Oh, and each time you push the TV timer button, it goes in 30 minute increments up to 2 hours, but the audio system goes in 10 minute increments. A installer can program it so 1 button push can give you a 1 hour sleep time for both the audio & picture. Add another twist to that, IF you could program that into your IR remote, you must hold the remote pointed at the equipment long enough for a whole string of commands to set up your timer sequence. With the companion RF base station for a Universal Remote, push a button and set the remote down (which is what most people are gonna do, then bitch because the IR remote "didn't work").
How about if you are watching the news and don't have the surround sound on? IF the audio system is off, THEN the remote controls the tv speakers, IF the audio system is on, THEN the remote controls the surround sound speakers.
How about direct access to your favorite channels, a couple pages of "his" channels, a couple pages of "her" channels, and a page of kids channels. OH, the double edged sword just reared up. A remote like this makes it so everybody in your house can work the system. Even the babysitter or visiting parents.
You don't have to remember that HD ESPN is on channel 1047 and not 47 so everybody thinks your new HD TV sucks because you punched 47 out of habit. You push the ESPN button and the remote spits out 1-0-4-7-enter and BAM instantly there.
So this wasn't so much a review as it was a example of whats possible. But don't expect these types of extra programming to included in a basic package. A basic program will end the clutter of a bunch of remotes on the table, and have one remote work your system. Push a button, now its a TV remote, push a button, now its a cable remote, etc. Automation and special features, your favorite channels and such cost more.
These are great remotes, they work well and they last(been using Universals Remotes for years).
Hate me if you must, but I work to make money just like you. If you want to go around me and buy something cheaper on-line thats fine, but I'm charging more for my labor to insall it. Don't forget too that labor is like product, you get what you pay for.
Disclaimer: Reviewer makes no guarantees that HD ESPN is on channel 1047, or that you even have a channel 1047. Further no guarantee is made that this remote will allow you to receive HD ESPN or standard ESPN. Side effects may include but are not limited to increased TV viewing, increased enjoyment of your CD collection, weight gain, couch indentions, wife and/or kids playing with your toys. Please go to bed if you experience sleep depravation from increased enjoyment of operating your A/V system.
