I am an audio quality freak! I love flac and ape, 64-bit decoding, cowon's jet audio sound re-production over windows media player any day of the week. I picked this up at the evil blue and yellow box store in town, and i'm blown away. I have NEVER found a sound card that I was extremely happy with the sound reproduction through headphones until NOW. Generic C-Media drivers with XP/Vista work the best, no need to equalize or install turtle beach's drivers. Using a set of Panasonic RP-HT355 headphones, (of course, I bypassed the potentiometer in the headphones because they all add resistance) this sound absolutely breathtaking. Read the review on these headphones if you are looking for a great sound with a budget.
The ONLY other device that can put out this sound quality is my Alesis Multi-Mix Firewire sound mixer. But this is a PRO-AUDIO device, it was a $300 unit!
With the volume at about 15% - 20%, and the loudness option checked in advanced properties, this usb sound card will more than reproduce enough sound through headphones to make it feel like your in the studio with the artist performing.
Works great with native Vista drivers too!
As far as the negative reviews go, they probably have bad headphones, or received a bad unit, there is NO WAY this device puts out anything but crystal clear sound. I make sure no windows sounds are using the device as a primary sound driver, to keep all the little clicks and windows navigation sounds out, and set Jet-Audio's direct sound output to this card when available.
Hot swap's GREAT with XP and Vista Beta2.
I've used these same headphones with... Creative SB Live 5.1, Audigy LS, SoundMAX Integrated HD Audio (Asus A8R-MVP Crossfire Onboard Audio), and Alesis Multimix Firewire 8 sound cards. The ONLY sound card that I would say sounds equal to or better is the Alesis.
