Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Tripp Lite U026-016 USB2.0 16-Feet Certified Active Extension CableCustomer Review: works well with xbox kinect (note power supply will be by TV) Summary: 5 Stars
good product - quality seems good and works as advertised - shipped quickly and packed well. The reason I am posting this review is that the reason we purchased this cable is to extend the distance between our xbox and the new kinect. Our xbox is not close to the TV .. microsoft sells a cable, but is more expensive and wasn't sure of the benefits. So, we ordered this one (active USB cable.. I don't think the passive ones work)..so far, it seems to work flawlessly .. no lag that we are aware of and the communication between the xbox and the kinect seems to work reliably and well .. (I don't know whether there would be any less lag with the microsoft product), but we are happy with this one.
One note, the way the kinect is designed, this cable will connect to the standard USB connector part of the kinect cable - what that means is that based on how the kinect cable is configured, the power supply for the kinect will stay at the kinect end of the USB cable (so will need to be plugged in near your TV, or at least no farther away than the length of the cable that comes attached to the kinect). Because this cable is active, I was hoping that I could move the power supply for the kinect over to where the xbox is. But based on how the kinect cable works, the power supply has a somewhat custom connector that has to remain near the TV (seems to be a decent amount of cable on that end..the power supply has a medium length cable on it, and it attaches to the end of the kinect cable which is also medium length.). I believe based on the photos that the microsoft cable may let one move the power supply for the kinect over to where the xbox is. Notice the photos of the kinect connector..the orange connector looks like a standard USB connector but isn't quite, so the USB connector can't fit the orange connector directly.. and since the microsoft connector has the orange ports on both ends, it may be needed to move the power supply.
But, if you are ok with the power supply near your TV, then this triplite cable worked fine!
Customer Review: Works great for finicky USB products Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this active USB extension cable so I could better position my Playstation 3 Eye accessory to use my PS3 Move controllers. I previously tried using a passive USB extension cable but the accessory would not properly send back the video signal to the PS3.
I wasn't sure if this particular active USB extension cable would work, because some active extension cables are essentially a passive extension cable integrally attached to a mini-hub, and therefore require hardware drivers to make them work (at least on a PC). This cable worked like a charm - I just plugged everything in and it worked with no problems or configuration whatsoever.
If this cable were available in black, I would have given it 6 stars.
Nov. 30th, 2010 update:
I bought the Kinect Motion Sensor for my XBox 360 and needed an extension for this also. Searching the internet, there were mixed reports that USB extension cords for the Kinect did not work, but it was unclear whether the issue pertained to the cord being USB 2.0 vs. 1.1 compliant. Microsoft sells a 10 ft. Kinect extension cord that utilizes its proprietary connector, i.e. the orange plug on the Kinect cord. (Xbox 360 Kinect Extension Cable). The Microsoft cord, however, costs $50 vs. the $18 Tripp cord, and is also shorter. To make a long story short, I connected this Tripp cord to the Kinect, and it worked without any hiccups. Some forums report that using an active USB extension introduces lag into the Kinect motion signal, but I didn't notice any more than when I attach the Kinect directly to the XBox. I will now buy another of these Tripp extension cords for my XBox. This item is remains a 5/5 star product. I would avoid other active USB cord products, as this one appears to be the most consistently compatible product on the market.
Customer Review: Solved wireless problem Summary: 5 Stars
My home office is a restored vintage travel trailer 70 feet from the main house. The wireless access point is in the house, and I was having trouble getting enough signal through the aluminum walls of the trailer. I knew I would have to run a USB extension outside for the Netgear WG111US Wireless G Usb Adapter, so I came to Amazon to see what was available. When I saw this powered USB cable and read the good reviews and reasons to use a powered cable, I decided to try it. I like the heavy quality of the cable itself, but the plastic pod housing the powered extension end feels a bit flimsy where the halves join in the middle. I wrapped it with a neat turn of electrical tape just for my own peace-of-mind.
I plugged in the wireless adapter to the extension end and ran the whole thing out the window. Instantly I had excellent full-strength signal. I created a weatherproof permanent installation for it under the roof of the trailer's porch deck, as I doubt either the cable or the adapter are rated for outdoor use!
Silly Fun Bonus: The cable has a red power-indicator LED in the extension end; together with the flashing blue LED of my wireless adapter, it looks like a tiny police car is sitting on the roof of my office at night. :)
I am very satisfied with this product and plan to buy another to extend the range of my webcam.
Customer Review: Finally! I have found what I was looking for! Summary: 5 Stars
I had been searching for a cheap(er) Active USB Extension cable for a long time. I finally came across this one day, and found that it was just what I was looking for!
I have used this product for about three months now, and have never had any problems with it. It does not require that you install any additional drivers (at least running on Vista Business x32), and I have not noticed any significant difference in USB speed since it was installed. One thing to note though is that it DOES interfere with your default keyboard and mouse if they are plugged into it. They do work just fine, but for some reason the BIOS on my ThinkCentre does not like the idea of having my keyboard and mouse on an extension cable. In my case however, the BIOS eventually gives up on trying to find it, and just continues on. If you do need to access the BIOS settings however, you will need to transfer the keyboard and mouse to the computer's built in USB Hub.
I have been very pleased with this purchase, and plan on getting one in the case that I need one again!
One other note, the device does have an annoying little red LED while it is active, so I do not suggest installing it in any locations that you need to have it on while sleeping. It is a nice indicator though to let you know that the device if functioning properly.
Customer Review: Works Perfectly as an extension for my USB Network Adapter Summary: 5 Stars
1st: I noticed from the bar code number that it was made in the USA;
so, it's a relief knowing it's not just another piece of crap from China.
2nd: It seems to be very well made (but then it should be for the price).
3rd: It performs very well as a USB Repeater. My Linksys WUSB300N USB
Network Adapter performs perfectly using this as a 16 foot extension.
Getting my USB Adapter in front of a Window really improves the signal
strength (although even then, positioning the unit even a couple inches
one way or another can really affect the signal).
Final Comment:
I think sellers would do them selves a favor by stating in their ads
if the product is not made in China. Most people these days
associate the "Made in China" label to mean the same thing
as "CRAP".
It's refreshing to find a good product idea that hasn't been
ruined by Chinese manufacturing.
